Barnum Schools approve area co-op, talk levy

April 30, 2020

Barnum’s school board approved a Barnum-Moose Lake-Willow River School Board Cooperative Committee at their remote meeting on April 21. The co-op will consist of three board members and an alternate from each school that will get together and look into ways the schools can cooperate. The first meeting does not have a date, as face to face meetings are not really possible at the moment, although it will be held in Willow River.

The possibility of a levy for the next school year was briefly discussed.

The board mentioned that they had not heard from the public on the idea, although with a worldwide pandemic they think people might not be thinking too far out in the future.

Board member Patrick Poirier said, “I know we have to move forward, but for this meeting I don’t think it would be appropriate to really talk about raising taxes in a time like this.”

The levy will be discussed in more detail at the finance committee meeting in May.

In other business, teacher Audra Richardson emailed a few questions to the board, which they will discuss at the next meeting.

The board accepted a $500 donation from Debra Bottem for Robotics. The board also approved a membership enrollment renewal for 2020-2021 with Northern Lights Special Education Cooperative.

The following students have been accepted into the National Honor Society: Mendota Castonguay, Jennie DeCaigny, Brooke Doran, Amri Gilbertson, Trayton Houck, Audrey Langhorst, Jonah McCauley, Maxwell Moors, Lacie O'Leary, Joseph Peterson, Skye Phipps, and KayeLea Poirier.

The coordinated efforts of staff has led to over 350 students accessing free breakfast and lunch, through pickup or delivery.

The school board’s working meeting will be held again remotely on May 5 at 6:30 p.m.
