Barnum thanks staff for work during distance learning

April 16, 2020

Aided by the existence of technology, the Barnum school board held its working meeting on April 7 with board members and the two school principals remotely video conferencing into the meeting.

High School Principal Gregg Campbell made a point to thank the staff and community for all their input and hard work during the recently made personnel reductions to next year’s school budget.

“Look forward to some more community dialogue for things moving forward,” he said.

Campbell, as well as Elementary School Principal Judi Vitito also made sure to thank all those that are involved in helping create and run the distance learning program, for their efforts and grace amidst this unique situation.

“The learning curve has been real for all of us,” said Vitito.

Vitito also talked about some of the obstacles that pop up, like having to change the meal delivery system the school had in place to a meal pick up system. Superintendent McNulty jumped in to say, “The reason we have to do that is they’re not reimbursing for delivered meals to non-free and reduced anymore.” The district can’t afford to lose “$500-$1,000 per day.”

Bus route changes, with the earlier proposed reduction of one route, were discussed, as well as a list of possible pickup and drop off times that would change. McNaulty noted the reduction of the route would “maybe affect half the routes.”

Chair Colleen Fetters would like to take a closer look at open enrollment and the impact it specifically has on Barnum, how it affects the district, and the fiscal side of it.

“I just want to have a better picture of open enrollment,” she said.

Board member Patrick Poirier will chair a committee to dig into the topic.

“Is there a better way for it to work?” asked Fetters.

Another remote meeting will be held for the school board’s regular meeting on Tuesday, April 21 at 6:30 p.m.
