More COVID-19 cases at Moose Lake Department of Corrections facility

As of April 7, Carlton County reported 13 confirmed cases of coronavirus, nine of which are inmates housed at the Department of Corrections (DOC) facility in Moose Lake.

According to information from the DOC, seven of the confirmed cases are recovering and there is another inmate with test results pending.

In response to the pandemic, all in-person visitation has been suspended until further notice.

In an apparently unrelated incident, on April 5 a 48-year-old inmate collapsed while taking a shower after complaining of heartburn shortly beforehand. He was later pronounced dead at the scene. It is not believed the matter is COVID-19 related as he did not complain of any virus symptoms and was not known to have contact with inmates who were tested or presumed positive with COVID-19. The matter is currently being investigated by the Moose Lake Police Department with assistance from the DOC Office of Special Investigations.
