Triple homicide in Cloquet

A Cloquet man has been charged with murder after allegedly killing a 20-month-old child and the child’s mother, who was 13 weeks pregnant.

The Carlton County Attorney’s Office filed three counts of second degree murder against Sheldon James Thompson, 33 of Cloquet. He appeared in court on March 10 and bail was set at $1 million with no cash option. His next appearance is set for March 16. All three charges are felonies with a potential sentence of up to 40 years imprisonment.

According to the formal complaint filed, on March 7, a reporting party contacted law enforcement stating Thompson had been acting unusual and allegedly admitted to killing a woman and her child. Officers went to the woman’s home and after obtaining a search warrant, located her deceased inside a closet. In a separate bedroom, her 20 month old child was also located deceased.

The complaint states Officers immediately attempted to locate the suspect. After receiving information from a source about his possible location, Thompson called 911 indicating a desire to turn himself in. Thompson was taken into custody and continues to be held. The complaint states, in speaking with various witnesses officers learned Thompson had told a number of people he had killed the woman and child.

A medical examination determined the woman died of multiple stab wounds and that she was 13 weeks pregnant. The 20 month old child suffered blunt force trauma. Both were ruled as homicide.
