Rebels win last two regular season games

Phillip Sheetz was the leading scorer in MLWR's victory over the Proctor Rails 95-42. Sheetz had 22 points including 5 threes.

The Moose Lake Willow River boys' basketball team played a make-up game with the Proctor Rails on Thursday, February 27, in the Willow River gym. The Rebels made 18 two-point shots and 18 three-point shots to give the Rebels a big victory, 95-42 and played one of their best games of the year. They were smooth and showcased their ball-handling skills, running their plays like clockwork.

Leading scorer for MLWR was Phillip Sheetz with 22, Mason Olson had 21, Brady Watrin 18, Michael Olson eight, Duane Broughton seven, Ben Dewey and Landin Kurhajetz with five each, Carter Johnson, Connor Welch and Logan Orvedahl each had three. Sheetz and Mason Olson each had five threes, Michael Olson and Brady Watrin each had two, and Ben Dewey, Broughton, Welch, and Orvedahl with one each. Watrin had nine assists, eight rebounds, and two steals. The Rebels free throw percentage was 71 percent. They made 53 percent of their three-point shots.

The Rebels' JV team won 59-55 and the C-team won 64-38.

The next night the Rebels traveled to Rush City. MLWR was missing one of their starters and got off to a slow beginning. At halftime they led 47-40. In the second half, the Rebels' outscored the Tigers by 20, winning the game 93-66.

Watrin led the team in scoring with 26, followed by Mason Olson with 23, Michael Olson 17, Landin Kurhajetz 11, Johnson seven, Sheetz five, Orvedahl three, and Broughton two.

The JV also won 60-56 and the C-team lost 58-52.

The Rebels have completed their regular season games. Esko finished first in the 7AA Section-SS1. MLWR was second, Pierz was third, Pequot Lakes fourth, Aitkin fifth, Crosby-Ironton sixth, and Pillager seventh. In Section 7AA-SS2 Virginia is first, Greenway second, Duluth Marshall third, Proctor fourth, International Falls fifth, Mesabi-East sixth, Eveleth-Gilbert seventh and Two Harbors eighth. The two sub-sections will playoff to get one winner from Section 7AA.

The Rebels will start their first round of Section 7AA playoffs on Thursday, March 5, in their home gymnasium against Pillager. The Section playoffs continue on Saturday, March 7, the semi-finals are March 11, and the finals on March 13. These games will all be played in the UMD-Romano Gym.
