Rebels win two, lose one in double overtime

Mason Olson joins 1,000 point club and breaks 3-point record for MLWR

Friday night up in Two Harbors half way through the game, Mason Olson sunk a three-point shot to give him 1,000 points. That same shot also broke Moose Lake Willow River's boys' basketball team's all-time career three-point record.

The Moose Lake Willow River Rebels (17-4) had two long road trips this past week and a home game with East Central. On Tuesday, February 4, the East Central Eagles came to the Willow River gym. The Eagles were in the lead scoring 20 points to the Rebels ten in the beginning of the game. Then the Rebels came out strong scoring 43 points by half-time. MLWR won the battle 82-52. The Eagles made 50 percent of their free throw and the Rebels made 38 percent.

Scoring for the Rebels were Mason Olson with 29, Phillip Sheetz 22, Brady Watrin ten, Duane Broughton seven, Ben Dewey six, Carter Johnson 3, Sam Dewey, Alex Watin and Drew Danielson each with two, and Landin Kurhajetz with one. Leading the Rebels in rebounds were Ben Dewey, Brady Watrin, Kurhajetz, and Johnson with six each. Sam Dewey had five rebounds. Mason Olson had eight assists, Broughton and Johnson had four each, Sam Dewey, Brady Watrin and Kurhajetz with three, and Ben Dewey with two.

For the Eagles, Mo Touray had 14, Clay Nelson, Dex LeTexier and Wes Watrin with seven, Brandon Kenowski six, Tim Roberts and Nathan Wefel three, Tyler Thorvig and Adam Fornengo with two, and Kai Petite one.

The Rebels JV defeated the Eagles JV 76-37. The MLWR C-Team also won 63-25.

On Thursday, February 6, The Rebels traveled north of Cook to the North Woods High School. North Woods has been to the state basketball tournament the last three years and has a record this season of 16-4. North Wood's Trevor Morrison 6'3" scored 61 points in a game a few weeks ago.

The Grizzlies started two freshmen, Jared Chiabotti and Benden Chiabotti, a sophomore, TJ Chiabotti, a junior, Darius Goggleye and senior, Morrison. At half-time MLWR led 39-36. The game was evenly played the entire night except for the free throws. The Rebels shot 14 free throws and the Grizzlies shot 32.

Brady Watrin made a three pointer at the buzzer to tie the score was 89-89 at the end of regulation. In the overtime, Brady Watrin hit a free throw to tie the game 96-96 and put it into a second overtime. The Grizzlies outscored the Rebels 13-8 in the second overtime to win the game 109-104.

Scoring for the Rebels were Brady Watrin with 39, Mason Olson 30, Sheetz 15, Michael Olson seven, Kurhajetz five, and Ben Dewey four. Brady Watrin pulled down 14 rebounds and Michael Olson with eight. Ben Dewey block two shots.

The Rebels JV won 87-55. The Grizzlies didn't have a C-Team.

On Friday, February 7, the Rebels played in Two Harbors. The Agates are 5-14 this season. MLWR won 95-39. The Rebels made 12 three-point shots. Mason Olson had four, Brady Watrin 2, Sheetz 3, Sam Dewey, Ben Dewey and Chance Lunde each had one. Scoring for the Rebels were Brady Watrin with 26, Mason Olson 23, Sheetz 11, Ben Dewey nine, Michael Olson eight, Sam Dewey seven, Kurhajetz four and Lunde three. The Rebels were seven for eleven from the line.

During this game, Mason Olson made a three-point basket that gave him his 1,000 point. He also broke Moose Lake Willow River's all-time career three-point record with the same shot.

The JV Rebels won 71-42 over Two Harbors and the C-Team won 62-30.

On Valentine's Day, February 14, the Rebels will host the Barnum Bombers in the Willow River gym. In the Polar League standings this week, Esko is first, MLWR second and Barnum is third. On Tuesday, February 18, Hinckley-Finlayson will come to Willow River. After this game the Rebels only have two games left before the playoffs. They will host Proctor and travel to Rush City. Come out and join in the fun.
