Rebels dominate South Ridge

February 6, 2020

Moose Lake Willow River Rebels (15-3) only had one scheduled game this past week. They traveled to South Ridge High School to take on the Panthers on Friday, January 31. The South Ridge varsity team started a 6’8” and 6’6” player. MLWR was ready to play a game, started out strong, and led by 16 at half-time, 46-30.

The Rebels were 14 for 18 at the line (78 prcent). Because the Rebels play a fast-paced running game, none of the South Ridge players lined up when MLWR shot free throws. They were all down the court under the Rebels basket, ready to defend their fast break. They were unsuccessful in their efforts. Rebels won 90-63.

Scoring for the Rebels were Brady Watrin with 32, Mason Olson 19, Michael Olson 17, Duane Broughton 8, Landin Kurhajetz 7, Sam Dewey 3, Ben Dewey and Carter Johnson each with two. Watrin had 11 rebounds. Mason Olson led the team in assists with eight and Watrin had seven.

MLWR sank 14 threes. Brady Watrin had five, Mason Olson and Michael Olson each had three, Broughton two and Sam Dewey with one. Watrin, Ben Dewey, Phillip Sheetz, Michael Olson, Sam Dewey and Mason Olson can all sink them from far beyond the arc. The Rebels are deadly from long-range, shooting bombs that swish for three.

The Rebels have ten guys that can play and a bunch of good shooters. Coach Wes Cummins wants them to get as many possessions as they can possibly get. Other teams have a very difficult time defending that speed.

The JV also won their game 72-39. Sam Dewey had 20 (six threes), Jimmy Walker 10, Drew Danielson 8, Alex Watrin 7, Connor Welch 6, Adam Neumann 5, Nolan Nelson and Duane Broughton each with 2.

The rankings in the Polar League-Big are: Esko, MLWR, Barnum, Two Harbors, South Ridge and Cook County. The Section 7AA rankings with their QRF are: MLWR (98.5), Esko (96.0), Pierz (86.6), Pequot Lakes (81-1), Crosby-Ironton (76.6), Pillager (57.4), and Aitkin (55.4). In the State rankings: Minneapolis North is first, MLWR and Virginia are tied for 20th, Esko is 26th, and Pine City is 29th.

The Rebels will play on Thursday, February 6, at North Woods and Friday, February 7, at Two Harbors. The Floodwood game that was postponed because of a snow storm will be made up, Monday, February 10 at Floodwood.
