Giersdorf inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame

February 6, 2020

This is the sixth year the Mountain Iron-Buhl High School has held their Basketball Hall of Fame induction. On Saturday, January 25, they inducted five players and a coach. Former Moose Lake Willow River boys’ basketball coach, Lyle Giersdorf, was one of the players. Lyle, now age 62, currently lives in Barnum.

Lyle graduated from Mountain Iron High School in 1976. He played varsity basketball in grades 10 through 12 and lettered all three years. Special awards he received include All-Conference in 1974-75, captain in 1974-75 and 1975-76 and was “Chief Red Raider” (Homecoming King) in 1975-76.

After graduating from St. John’s University in 1980 with a degree in teaching and coaching, Lyle took a position at the Buhl school. When the schools merged, he taught and coached at Mountain Iron-Buhl until 1989. From 1989 until 2003, Lyle taught and coached at Moose Lake and Willow River while earning a master’s degree from St. Scholastica in 1999. He retired from classroom teaching in 2014 and from online teaching for the North East Service Co-op in 2015.

When Lyle was asked what his most memorable moments were, he said “There were many!” When he was head coach at Buhl in 1982-83, they defeated Chisholm for the first time in over 20 years. In 1988-89, when he was an assistant coach, Mountain Iron-Buhl boys won their first District 27 Championship. In a semi-final game against Orr, during a time out, Coach John Gornick’s teeth came out while he was setting up a game winning play for Luke Winans. (Winans is Mountain Iron-Buhl’s current Athetic Director.)

Lyle is married to his wife Carla and they have two grown children—Greta, married to Chad Dahlberg, and Matthew, married to Abby Hage. Lyle and Carla have five grandsons: Sullivan, Abbott and Kipp (parents are Greta and Chad) and Brody and Gavin (Matt and Abby sons).
