Rebels topple Duluth Marshall

The Duluth Marshall Hilltoppers boys' basketball team came to play in Willow River on Tuesday, January 14. The Rebels won all three games: C-team won 61-10, the Junior Varsity won 61-31 and the Varsity won 72-64.

The Hilltoppers started three seniors, Sam Loan, Santiago Gomez and Matthew Erickson, junior, Oscar Timm and his brother, sophomore, Jasper Timm.

The Rebels were down by eight at halftime, 30-38. At the half, Phillip Sheetz led with nine, Brady Watrin seven and Ben Dewey with six. Watrin got 19 of his 26 points in the second half of the game. Mason Olson was four for four at the free throw line and Watrin made seven of his ten free throws. The Rebels were 12 for 16 for 75 percent at the line.

Rebounding for the Rebels was Watrin with ten, Landin Kurhajetz nine, Ben Dewey four, and Mason and Michael Olson each with three. The Rebels made eight three-point shots; Ben Dewey had four, Sheetz three and Watrin one. The Hilltoppers had eight threes also: Erickson with four, and Loan and Oscar Timm each had two.

Watrin was the scoring leader with 26, Sheetz had 17, Ben Dewey 12, Mason Olson eight, Kurhajetz and Carter Johnson each had four and Duane Broughton with one free throw.

For Marshall, sophomore, Jasper Timm led with 21, Erickson had 15, Loan 14, Oscar Timm eight, and Gomez six.

With this 72-64 victory, Rebels have eleven wins and three losses (two in the holiday tournament to Litchfield and Concordia Academy, St. Paul). Their only regular season loss is to Esko.

The game with Floodwood (1-10) on Friday, January 17, was postponed due to the snow storm and will be made up at a later date. On Thursday, January 23, Cloquet (4-10) will come to the Willow River gym, and on Friday, January 24, the Rebels will travel to Cromwell-Wright (11-1) for the game.
