Council approves new fire hires

January 23, 2020

The Barnum City Council approved two hire recommendations made by Fire Chief Corey Hurst at their regular meeting on January 13 (council member Darrel Berry was absent).

Prior to the hires it was announced Bruce Smith was retiring from the fire department after over thirty years of service. Chief Hurst read a note from Smith, “I am retiring from the Barnum Fire Department as of November 13, 2019. I have enjoyed working with everyone over the years and seen a lot of great change and improvements. Thanks for letting me be a part of the organization.” In addition, due to “unforeseen circumstances,” Chris Smith submitted his resignation as a firefighter, effective 8/5/2019. The board accepted the retirement and resignation.

Chief Hurst recommended the hiring of Bradley Pearson and Isaac Rohde on a one-year probation period, which the board approved.

The board approved keeping the 2019 committee appointments the same for the upcoming year of 2020. They also authorized bingo for the Barnum Area Community Club for the dates of March 20 and November 13.

Liquor Store Manager, Eric Pellinen recommended the dismissal of a liquor store employee who he thought was “resigning, but she hasn’t given us a letter yet.” The board approved the dismissal.

The next council meeting is February 10, 2020 at 6 p.m at the Barnum city office.
