January 16, 2020

The Moose Lake/Willow River girls basketball team took on Onamia and Eveleth Gilbert this past week, winning both games to increase their record to 6-5.

The Lady Rebels went up against Onamia Panthers on Monday, January 6. Ella Rhoades started out the scoring at the free throw line hitting both attempts. Maci Kukuk and Natalie Mikrot added 3 quick buckets to make the score 9-0 Rebels. Onamia scored their first 2 points at the 15-minute mark. Alivia Mallory added a free throw to make the score 10-2. Onamia scored again making the score 10-4. The Panthers attempted a run with the back door play but Natalie Mikrot knocked it down. Onamia came within 4 at 15-11 and the Rebels attempted to pull away a few times but the Panthers were able to keep within striking distance for most of the first half. The Rebels went on a 10-0 run with 4 minutes remaining to end the half at 36-22.

Maci Kukuk scored the first 12 points of the second half for the Rebels. Ella Rhoades then stole the ball from Onamia and took it in for an easy layup. Continued scoring from Maci Kukuk, Natalie Mikrot, Ella Rhoades, and Alivia Mallory pushed the score to 71-42. Sarah Christy and Kelli Granquist rounded out the Rebel scoring with 2 points each at the end of the game. Rebels won 75-44.

Maci Kukuk led the Rebels with 27 points, Natalie Mikrot with 20, Ella Rhoades 12, Alivia Mallory 7, Monica Mikrot 3, Sarah Christy 2, and Kelli Granquist 2.

“Nice team win tonight,” said Coach Judd. “We played good defense and forced a lot of turnovers. It was also great to see us take care of the basketball and our girls did very well executing in the half court offense. Good start to the week and hopefully more good things to come tomorrow against Evelth-Gilbert.”

On Tuesday, January 7, the Rebels took on the Eveleth-Gilbert Golden Bears.

Monica Mikrot started off Rebels scoring with a 3-pointer. However, E-G quickly added 5 unanswered points to make the score 5-3. Ella Rhoades hit two free throws to tie the game at 5. MLWR had a difficult time getting shots to go in the basket, allowing the Golden Bears to outscore them. E-G took a 23-8 lead midway in the first half. Alivia Mallory ended the shooting drought for the Rebels with a rebound and put back. Natalie Mikrot then hit 2 straight 3-pointers to boost the Rebels scoring to 24-16. Emily Bohnsack added another 3 and a Maci Kukuk rebound transitioned into an easy lay up for Natalie Mikrot. The Rebels quickly came back from 15 down to 6 points down. Alivia Mallory added 2 free throws. E-G’s height under the basket and quick passing allowed them to outscore the Rebels.

Grace Stephenson ended the second scoring drought for the Rebels by hitting 2 free throws. Rebels went into the end of the half down 44-31.

The Rebels came out of the locker room ready to play. Ella Rhoades started out the second half scoring for the Rebels making the first 4 points. Emily Bohnsack hit a 3-pointer and the Rebels forced a turnover but were unable to convert. Maci Kukuk hit a 3-pointer bringing the Rebels within 7 at 48-41. Ella Rhoades pulled down a rebound off an E-G missed shot and passed the ball down court to Maci Kukuk who was able to hit the easy layup. Monica Mikrot stole the ball from the Golden Bears and dribbled down the length of the court for a missed layup but was fouled in the act of shooting.

Mikrot knocked down both free throws bringing the Rebels within 3. MLWR pulled within 1 after Rhoades scored but E-G’s inside game returned. The Rebels, however, continued to peck away at the lead, with more 3-pointers by Mikrot. Tough defense and aggressive play by the Rebels and full court pressure led to turnovers by the Golden Bears. Natalie Mikrot hit a 3-pointer that finally put the Rebels on top 65-63. MLWR never looked back and was able to put the game away at the free throw line. Rebels won 77-67.
