Warren Tester was recently honored as an outstanding conservationist at the annual meeting of the Minnesota Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts, December 8-10, 2019 in Bloomington, Minn.  He was selected by the Carlton Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) for the award.

Each year, the state's SWCDs recognize individuals and organizations for outstanding accomplishments in implementing conservation practices and improving Minnesota's natural resources.  The award program is conducted with support from The Farmer magazine.

According to Brad Matlack, manager of the Carlton SWCD, Warren was recognized for his conservation ethic in managing 160 acres he purchased in Clear Creek Township in 1978. Warren realized the importance of management on his property because the north fork of the Nemadji River, a designated trout stream, flows right through the property. Starting with a forest stewardship plan completed in 2008 setting goals for managing the forest, Warren completed projects to increase his forests diversity, improve wildlife habitat, all with a mind to the sensitive soils on his property.

"It has been fun and rewarding to improve the habitat on this property," Tester has commented.

"We're really proud of Warren and his family and what they have done for soil and water conservation in Carlton County," said Mr. Matlack.  "Warren provides a great example on managing forestland in the red clay sensitive soil area of the Nemadji River Basin for other conservationists in Carlton County.
