Rebels' intense defense overpowers Proctor and Barnum

The Moose Lake Willow River boys' basketball team are 4-0 for the season. They played at Proctor on Monday, December 9 and came home with a 75-61 victory. On Friday, December 13, the Barnum Bombers were host to the Rebels. The Rebels won 73-55.

The Proctor squad is under the new direction of Coach Kory Deadrick, a former coach in the Esko system. The Rebels were in the lead the entire game. At half-time it was 33-26. Sixty percent of their shots were falling in. The Rebels continued their fast-paced play and Proctor couldn't keep up.

The Rebels once again had nine players score. Ben Dewey and Logan Orvedahl were the leading scorers with 12 each. Brady Watrin had 11, Michael Olson and Landin Kurhajetz nine, Phillip Sheetz eight, Mason Olson seven, Carter Johnson six, and Duane Broughton with one. Brady Watrin pulled down eight rebounds, Jonhson seven, Kurhajetz six and Ben Dewey four.

Proctor player, Dylan Hom, was the leading scorer for the Rails with 26 points. Connor St. Germaine had 15 and Keegan Dinh with 11. The Junior Varsity won a close one 54-51. The C-team was short four of their players due to injuries and school events. They lost by a basket, 58-60.

The Rebels went to Barnum to take on the Barnum Bombers on Friday. The crowd was into the game. The gym was packed. There was a big group of students at the game to support the teams. Both teams play high-intensity defense. The game was fast paced the entire game and fun to watch. At half-time the Rebels were ahead by nine, 34-25.

Both teams were always working to get the ball back. Rebels deflected the ball 16 times and the Bombers 15 times. Ben Dewey and Sheetz each had three, and Sam Dewey, Michael Olson, Brady Watrin and Mason Olson with two each, Orvedahl and Kurhajetz with one. For the Bombers, Joe Peterson had eight and Braiden Davis with four, Blaze Hurst, Jacob Hultgren, Matthew Berry with one each.

The Rebels made 10 for 16 from the charity line for 62.5 percent. The Bombers made 59.1 percent from the line.

Nine players scored for the Rebels again. Brady Watrin led all scorers with 22 point, followed by Mason Olson with 14, Orvedahl 9, Ben Dewey and Sheetz with eight, Michael Olson five, Kurhajetz 3, and Johnson and Alex Watrin with two.

Barnum out rebounded the Rebels 34-31. Brady Watrin pulled down 13 rebounds for the Rebels. For Barnum, Hultgren had seven and Davis with six.

For the Bombers, Hultgren scored 11 points, Hurst 10, Davis, Willie Richardson and Reed Kornovich 7, Berry 6, Peterson 5, and Garrett Coughlin with 2. Barnum plays at South Ridge on Thursday, December 19, at 7:15 and at Virginia on Friday, December 27 at 2:45.

The MLWR JV won 66-52 and the C-team won 59-30.

The Rebels will host Cook County on Friday, December 20, in Willow River. They are playing in the 2019 Crusader Christmas Boys' Basketball Classic at Cathedral High School in St. Cloud on December 26, 27, and 28. Their first game is at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 26 against Class AA Litchfield Dragons (3-1).
