Rebel Hoopsters defeat Virginia and Pillager

For the first contest of the year, the Moose Lake Willow River Rebels boys' basketball team traveled to Virginia. The Virginia Blue Devils were big and tall. This year's Rebel team has a depth of talent. Offense was the key to the 101-91 victory over the Blue Devils. They had to score over 100 points in order to win the game. At half-time the Rebels led by 18, 57-39. Virginia scored 52 points in the second half to tighten up the game. Phillip Sheetz, Mason Olson, Ben Dewey, and Michael Olson sunk eleven 3-pointers. Virginia's Mason Carlson made four 3-point shots for the Blue Devils.

MLWR made 16 of their 19 free throws for 84 percent. Brady Watrin had six assists, Mason Olson five, Ben Dewey and Landin Kurhajetz each had three. Watrin had three steals, Dewey and Carter Johnson each with two, Logan Orvedahl, Sheetz, Michael Olson, and Kurhajetz each had one.

Orvedahl scored 2 points, Dewey 3, Duane Broughton 4, Watrin 19, Phillip Sheetz 14, Mason Olson 30, Michael Olson 13, Johnson 4, and Kurhajetz 12.

The JV Rebels team defeated the Blue Devils 81-18 and the Rebels C-team also won 54-36.

MLWR hosted Pillager for their first home game at Willow River on Friday, December 6. Pillager returned all five of their starters from last year's successful team. They are all seniors. Rebels' game was intense defense and Pillager had a hard time getting going. With the intense defense comes more fouls and Rebels had 23 fouls to Pillager's 15. Rebels were 11 for 15 from the free throw line for 73 percent. Pillager shot 30 free throws and made 18. Pillager's Spencer Schaefer was nine for 13 at the line.

At half time, it was Rebels 41, Huskies 24. Rebels blocked seven shots. Rebels' intense defense forced Pillager to have 24 turnovers. The Rebels were 14 for 27 from the two-point range for 52 percent accuracy and were 42 percent beyond the arch. The final score was 84-60 Rebels.

The Rebels had 14 assists. Watrin led with five and Ben Dewey, Sam Dewey, Broughton, Mason Olson, Michael Olson, Kurhajetz, and Johnson all contributed. Ben Dewey and Kurhajetz each had three steals, Sheetz and Mason Olson each had two and Broughton, Watrin, Connor Welch, Michael Olson with one. Pillager had 49 rebounds to Rebels 35. Mason Olson had nine.

Scoring was led by Mason Olson with 30, Sheetz 16, Brady Watrin 10, Michael Olson 5, Johnson 5, Broughton 5, Kurhajetz 4, Chance Lunde 3, Drew Danielson 3, Orvedahl 2, and Alex Watrin 1. Three-point shots were made by Mason Olson with six, Sheetz four, Broughton, Lunde, Danielson, and Michael Olson with one each.

The JV Rebels won their game 62-47 and the C-team won 49-37. It was a clean sweep winning all six games this week for three MLWR high school boys' basketball teams. They are coached by Wes Cummins, Will Carlson, Paul Dewey, and Paul Olson. The managers are Nate Jungers and Henrik Hanson.
