Mercy Hospital chooses to partner with Essentia Health

November 14, 2019

Mercy Hospital has recently announced plans for a formal partnership with Essentia Health. Earlier this fall, the hospital issued a request for proposal to several health care providers, seeking a formal partnership to bring greater stability and health resources to the community. Five proposals were reviewed; Mercy’s Board of Directors selected to pursue a partnership with Essentia based on Essentia’s robust plan to grow primary and specialty care services in Moose Lake, along with hospital and emergency care.

Mercy has discussed partnerships with other healthcare organizations in the past, including Essentia and Gateway Clinic. The Board’s current action was taken in response to declining patient volumes over the past several years. Only through a strong partnership will Mercy be able to continue to offer and expand needed services in a complex and competitive healthcare environment.

Essentia is committed to providing more services close to home for our patients. Goals of the partnership are to:

• Retain and grow jobs

• Recruit primary and specialty physicians in order to grow services

• Install EPIC, an integrated electronic medical record

In addition, Mercy would be 100% owned by Essentia, thereby eliminating the tax levy and hospital district.

The due diligence phase with Essentia, in which the details of the partnership are negotiated and finalized, is just getting underway. The process is expected to take six to nine months. Once completed, Mercy’s Board will make a final vote on the agreement.

While there is much work to do before we reach that point, I am confident that a partnership with Essentia is the right fit for our hospital and the communities we serve.
