Moose Lake man killed in crash

November 7, 2019

A fatal two-vehicle crash on Interstate 35 just north of North Branch led to the closing of the freeway for several hours, along with a brief search for one of the drivers. Moose Lake resident Joeffre Kolosky died as a result of the crash.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol’s incident report, at about 5:28 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 1, a 2001 Toyota Tundra driven by 23-year-old Samuel Dakota Moreno of Marine on St. Croix was traveling northbound on I-35 at a high rate of speed when he rear-ended a 2003 Buick Park Avenue, driven by 63-year-old Joeffre Michael Kolosky of Moose Lake. The force of the collision caused Kolosky to leave the roadway on the right side and roll over.

Upon arrival, law enforcement found Kolosky dead at the scene and Moreno having left the scene. Moreno was found a short time later by law enforcement and taken into custody. He is being held at the Chisago County Jail on suspicion of criminal vehicular homicide, driving without a license, DWI, and drug possession.

Northbound I-35 was closed between Highway 95 in North Branch and Harris until approximately 11:30 a.m. while the State Patrol recon team investigated the crash.
