Charges filed for Cloquet shooting

October 24, 2019

A 45-year-old man from Minneapolis was shot on October 18 during a funeral at Fond du Lac Head Start in Cloquet. Shelby Boswell, a 28-year-old also from Minneapolis, was taken into custody at the scene and is being held at the Carlton County Jail. Boswell appeared in court on October 21 for charges of felony first and second degree assault, two felony drug charges, a felony firearm possession violation, and a gross misdemeanor for introducing contraband to jail. Bail was set at $500,000, and Boswell is next scheduled to appear in court on October 28.

The shooting was reported shortly before 10 a.m. According to a press release from the Cloquet Police Department, the shooting occurred in the gymnasium at the Head Start Building. The Fond du Lac High School, which is near but not part of the Head Start Building, was temporarily put on lockdown because of its proximity. School was not in session, but students were present for other activities. However, no children were at the Head Start Building.

A single shot was fired, striking the victim. He was transported to Community Memorial Hospital and later to Essentia Hospital in Duluth. An update from the police department stated Robinson was later released from the hospital.

It was said other funeral attendees restrained Boswell and helped hold him until officers arrived. A firearm was recovered at the scene.

Police believe the incident to be an isolated incident and that there is no threat to the community at this time.
