Willow River discusses part-time position and fire department fundraiser

September 12, 2019

Two applications have been received for the part-time maintenance worker position, it was said at the meeting of the Willow River City Council on Tuesday, September 3.

The applicants will be interviewed on Tuesday, September 10, before the budget meeting at 6 pm. The levy will be set and a decision about hiring a part-time worker will also be made.

There was more discussion about the Christmas lights in the city. Suggestions were made about LED lights and flat panels. It was labor intensive to replace the lights in the snowflakes that have been used in the past. It was suggested that the senior students could do the labor to earn volunteer hours for class credit.

The council decided to check into the types and cost of fixtures available and bring the information back for a decision at the October meeting.

It was announced that the fire department will have a fundraiser on Saturday, October 12. There will be an ATV ride starting at noon or 1 p.m. with a meal and polka music from 4 to 6 p.m. at the fire hall. The council approved a one-day liquor license for the relief association for the event.

As the city is the fiscal agent for the North Pine Riders Snowmobile Club, the council passed a motion to approve a DNR grant agreement in the amount of $17,500 for an increase in aid for trails-in-aid trail maintenance. The council had originally approved the application in May for an $8,000 grant. The additional grant funds would bring the total aid up to $25,500.

There was discussion about donating the sand shed. Someone was interested but nothing has been heard recently, reported Councilor Sheldon Johnson.

The next meeting of the Willow River City Council is Monday, October 7, at 7 p.m.
