Rebels win home opener against Hermantown

Logan Orvedahl (number 26) scored two touchdowns one on the opening kickoff and it was his birthday.

Willow River hosted the Moose Lake Willow River football season's opener on Thursday, August 29. Hermantown Hawks kicked off to Rebels' sophomore Logan Orvedahl. Orvedahl returned the kick 83-yard for a touchdown to start the game. The two-point conversion failed. Hermantown's quarterback, Peter Soumis, found the end zone with a touchdown scoring drive putting the Hawks in the lead 7-6. Hermantown's Soumis scored again in the first quarter on a keeper to make the score 13-6.

With 5:47 to go in the second quarter, MLWR junior quarterback Mason Olson threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to junior Adam Olson. The two-point conversion failed making the score 13-12 Hawks at the end of the half.

The Rebels kicked off to start the second half. Freshman Jackson Thompson and senior Logan Privette got tackles and Carter Johnson knocked down a pass to give Hermantown loss yards. The Hawks got a holding penalty and the Rebels got the ball back. Junior Blake Juhl carried for a first down. Juhl carried again for a first down with the help of a block from Eli Werner. Hermantown got the ball back after stopping the Rebels and Juhl sacked the quarterback. Privette's tackle gave the Hawks a 13-yard loss. On Hawks' second down, Privette and Ethan Burton got to the ball carrier for another loss. The Hawks had to go 25 yards for a first down. Their pass was not good because of Johnson's defense. The third quarter ended with no scoring drives, 13-12.

In the fourth quarter, Brady Watrin caught a 33-yard pass from Olson and Juhl ran for the 2-point conversion to put the Rebels ahead 20-13. With 1:44 left to go in the game, Privette put heavy pressure on Soumis, causing him to get rid of the football, and Orvedahl intercepted it and ran for a 65-yard touchdown. Two-point conversion failed, score was 26-13. With 34 seconds on the clock, Hermantown called for a time-out. With 34 seconds left on the clock, the Hawks scored. Their extra points failed. Score was Rebels 26 Hawks 19. With 10 seconds left in the game, Hawks tried for an onside kick. Watrin fell on the football to end the game 26-19.

MLWR has a young team. The Rebels starting offense has four seniors, four juniors, and three sophomores. Mason Olson was 6/18 in passing yards with 111 and two touchdowns. Orvedahl led in rushing yards with 60 yards on 15 attempts, followed by Juhl with 41 yards on 6 attempts and Werner 25 yards on 10 attempts. Watrin led in receiving yards with 93 yards on 4 passes. Juhl led the Rebels in tackles with 12, 7 assists. Burton was second with 6 tackles, 5 assists. Garret Peterson had 3 tackles, 4 assists. Peterson and Privette each sacked the quarterback and Privette had 2 tackles for loss of yards. Werner had 3 punt returns. Landin Kurhajetz kicked offs for 193 yards, the longest one was 50 yards. Sophomore Orvedahl ran for 2 touchdowns on his birthday. MLWR had 111 passing yards and 126 rushing yards. They had 11 first downs compared to Hermantown's 14 first downs.

On Friday, September 6, the Barnum Bombers with host the MLWR Rebels at 7:00 p.m.
