It's the 129th Annual Carlton County Fair this weekend, August 15-18, at the fairgrounds in Barnum. As always, a number of events will be taking place throughout the fair in addition to the regular attractions.

The gates for the fair open at 11 a.m. on Thursday, 8 a.m. on Friday, 7 a.m. on Saturday, and 9 a.m. on Sunday. There is a $7 fee to get in (under 12 is $3; 5 and under is free). However, Saturday is Military Day; all veterans and their spouses get in free (must show a military ID).

The pavilion will be filled with many entertainers throughout the day, ending in the evening with Kris Kroze from The Voice at 7 p.m. The tractor pull begins at 6 p.m. in the grandstand.

Friday is Senior Day and the Chmielewski Fun Time Band will be playing for the Outstanding Senior Citizen & Century Farm Awards. The kids pedal tractor pull starts at 2:30 p.m. and the oval races start up at 6:00 p.m.

The 4-H Horse and Pony Show goes throughout the day, beginning at 7:30 a.m. in the arena. The 128th horse races start at 1:30 p.m. in the grandstand. These are the only remaining horse races at a county fair in the state! Stick around for the open class dog show at 3:00 p.m. In the evening, the popular demolition derby begins at 6:30 p.m. in the grandstand, followed by fireworks.

Sunday starts off with a church service at 9:30 a.m., followed by the draft horse exhibition at 11:00 a.m. Don't miss the Mutton Bustin' in the arena at 12:00 p.m. and the Holy Hootenanners performing in the pavilion at 12:00 p.m. The horse races continue at 1:30 p.m., followed by the figure 8 races in the grandstand at 6:00 p.m.

Entries for the various categories (art, baking, hobbycraft, animals, etc.) will be on display in the various buildings. A number of food vendors will be there to satisfy your cravings. Games and ride attractions will also be set up for more fun.

From Fair Manager Allysha Sample:

The other day I was in my office and this older gentleman (84 to be exact) called me to ask what was going on each day of the fair. He said he wanted to call to chat and thank me for allowing him to still have a piece of the MN State Fair. He said he had been going to the State Fair since he was 4 and never missed a year. He told me you know I'm no spring chicken anymore and it's harder and harder for him to get around but four years ago he discovered the Carlton County Fair and he knew he would be able to continue his tradition of visiting the State Fair because "our" fair is like a mini State Fair! He could not thank me enough! This is the BEST compliment I have ever received! Yes, he made me cry as this is my last fair. I have been the fair manager for 10 years and have enjoyed EVERY minute!! This gentleman warmed my heart and reminded me to be proud of what we got going on here in our small county. So remember, pack up your kiddos, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends and come to the fair this weekend.
