BCA releases update on officer-involved shooting

August 8, 2019

The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) recently released the identities of the individuals involved in the officer-involved shooting from July 29, in the Hillside Terraces Mobile Home Park in Moose Lake. Sergeant Jason Warnygora of the Carlton County Sheriff’s Office was the deputy who discharged his firearm during the incident. Sgt. Warnygora has been with the Sheriff’s Office for 14 years. He is currently on administrative leave which is standard procedure in such a situation.

The man injured has been identified as Shawn Michael Olthoff, 34, of Moose Lake. Mr. Olthoff continues to receive treatment for his injuries at Essentia Health in Duluth.

The BCA has stated there was no body camera or dash camera video of the incident, and no weapons were recovered at the home. The BCA’s investigation is active and ongoing.

Moose Lake Police Chief Bryce Bogenholm said that, based on past experience, a report from the BCA will probably take a couple of months. He did not have any updates on Mr. Olthoff’s condition.

“It was a very traumatic situation for everyone involved,” said Chief Bogenholm. “The police department has received a tremendous amount of support and kind words. That really helps.”

The incident came about when law enforcement went to serve a felony warrant on Mr. Olthoff for use of deadly force against a peace officer and two firearm violations. The warrant was issued regarding an incident that occurred on July 26 in Carlton in which Mr. Olthoff allegedly pointed a gun at a deputy during a traffic stop. Mr. Olthoff fled from the scene and was not located at that time. A K9 search did locate a gun holster and ammunition.

This paper previously reported on Mr. Olthoff for two felony charges and multiple misdemeanors pending from an incident in Moose Lake on May 6, 2019, for possession of stolen property and a controlled substance among other violations.
