The U12 travel baseball team from Barnum/Moose Lake/Willow River (BMW) defeated Esko twice this past Sunday in a doubleheader, 10-5 and 10-8, and has now won 11 of their last 12 games. Other wins in the streak include beating Pierz 10-8, Rogers 14-3, Duluth 15-4, two over Cromwell-Wright, and 4 against Pequot Lakes. The lone loss was to White Bear Lake in a Duluth tournament in which the BMW squad came in third. Other losses came to Hastings and Robbinsdale in BMW's first two games.

Brody Vernon has been the top starting pitcher going 5-1 with a 12K/2BB ratio in 16 innings and a 2.25 ERA. Other top pitchers include steady Joey Steen at 3-0 with a 9K/5BB in 13 innings with a 4.95 ERA, strike throwing machine Eli Gilbertson 2-1 with 8K/1BB and a 2.67 ERA, sneaky fast Bryce Ferguson 4K/1BB and a 3.17 ERA, and flamethrower Reese Bode 11K/9BB in 6.2 innings with a 1.80 ERA and 5 saves.

Lefty swinging Reese Bode, 3B/SS/OF, has led this strong hitting team with a .590 average (23-39), 19 runs, 6 doubles, 3 triples, a 280 foot home run, 20 RBI's, a .974 SLG, and 13 steals. Speed and power have helped Levi Mikrot, CF/SS/3B, to hit .429 (15-35) with 17 runs, 1 double, 3 triples, 2 inside the park home runs, 8 RBI's, and 16 stolen bases. Lead off man Eli Gilbertson C/SS/OF hits .385 (15-39) with 16 runs, 2 doubles, and 11 steals. Strong lefty PJ Frisch, 1B/OF/C, is at .360 (9-25), 8 runs, 5 RBI's and a .529 OBP. Quick bat Elliott Wasche, OF/2B, hits .357 (5-14) with a double and 6 runs scored. Opposite field hitting lefty Brody Vernon, IF/OF, hits .333 (10-30) with a double, 9 RBI's, and 8 steals. Owen Peterson, C/SS, hits .308 (8-26) with a double, 8 runs and 7 RBI's. Tough-to-fan Landen Oetterer, OF/2B, is at .280 (7-25) with 7 RBI's, 9 steals, and 0 strike outs.

Shining with the glove in the field has been Eli Gilbertson with yeoman's work behind the plate and a quick turn at second base on a double play. Owen Peterson has been solid behind the plate and played error free ball at shortstop. Levi Mikrot made one of the best plays as he sped to field a grounder that had hopped into foul territory behind third base and then threw the runner out at first making fans think they were seeing Brooks Robinson in the 1970 World Series. Other slick plays and steady defense have come from PJ Frisch, Reese Bode, Bryce Ferguson, Michael Larson, and Eli Youngs.

The Beamers will finish their season with 5 games in a Cloquet (Braun Park) tournament this weekend. They play Cloquet Friday, July 26 at 10 a.m., Virginia at 4 p.m., Hibbing on Saturday at 10 a.m., and International Falls at 4 p.m. Sunday's game will be against a team from the other side of the bracket depending on their seeding. The 11U and 14U BMW teams will also participate in the Cloquet tournament that has over 70 teams.
