Rebels 9th graders win Minnesota Invitational Basketball championship

Moose Lake Willow River boys' basketball team played in the Pacesetter Minnesota Invitational Basketball tournament held in the Maple Grove Middle School on Saturday, June 22. The other teams accepting the invitation were Hawley, Warroad, La qui Parle Valley, New Ulm and Ashby. They started out with two pool play games, one against each team in their pool. The team with the best record then was ranked number one, second place number two, and third place number three.

MLWR played Hawley in their first game. At the half Rebels were trailing 16-13. In the second half their offense connected and they won the game 39-31. Phillip Sheetz had 12, Logan Orvedahl 6, Chance Lunde 5, Connor Welch and Landin Kurhajetz 4 each, Duane Broughton 3, Sam Dewey and Ethan Burton 2 each.

For their second game they played New Ulm. They were trailing at half-time 18-24. The Rebels intense defense allowed only four baskets in the second half. Rebels won 45-35. Dewey had 11, Sheetz 9, Broughton 8, Kurhajetz 6, Orvedahl 4, Durkin 3, Burton and Dom Beaulieu with 2 each.

After winning the two pool play games, they were ranked number one in their pool. They played Warroad, who was ranked number one in their pool. They were tied with each other 22-22 at the half. The Rebels pulled ahead and won the game 44-36. Broughton led with 11, Dewey and Sheetz had 9 each, Kurhajetz 8, Orvedahl 4, Burton 2 and Durkin 1. The Rebels won first place and were awarded medals and a plaque.
