Principal Kazmierczak hired as basketball coach

Brian Kazmierczak was hired as the girls’ basketball head coach at the meeting of the Barnum School Board on Tuesday, June 18.

The board discussed the method of evaluating the coaches.

“It is going to be weird for me to evaluate my boss,” said Athletic Director Dave Duesler.

He added that it hadn’t been discussed yet as to who he would go to with the evaluation. He did say that in the past, the evaluation is placed in the file with the district secretary.

Several board members suggested that he go to the superintendent with the evaluation. Kazmierczak is the high school principal and the report would normally be taken to him. That will not be possible when he is the head basketball coach, it was said.

“The athletic director and superintendent will have to work it out,” said Board Chair Paul Coughlin. “We don’t want it coming back to us.”

There was discussion about hiring another law firm as the school district’s legal attorney. An unnamed firm will be contacted about a fee schedule, and the board will consider signing an agreement with the firm. No decision was made.

In other business, the 2019-2020 budget was approved and the list of coaching assignments was also approved.

The July working board meeting was canceled. The monthly board meeting was set for Tuesday, July 16, at 6:30 p.m. The August working board meeting may also be canceled, since the principals were not back from summer vacation yet, it was said. A final decision will be made at the July meeting.
