Baseball section playoffs in Proctor and Nashwauk


The first round of section 7AA playoffs began on Tuesday, May 28, in Proctor. In the first game of the day, Duluth Marshall defeated Two Harbors’ Agates 18-0 in five innings. The Rebels’ first opponent was Crosby-Ironton (10-9). MLWR played C-I last week and lost after ten innings. The local team was determined to win this second contest and scored seven runs in the first inning. C-I Rangers’ pitcher, Jonathan Jacobson, was replaced with Matt Christopher after one inning. Rebels’ pitcher, Danny Whited, struck out five of the next seven batters. In the bottom of the third, the Rangers got on the board, scoring four runs and one in the fourth. In the fifth inning the Rebels battled back, crossing the plate four more times. Both teams scored one in the seventh. Rebels captured the victory 12-6.

Whited was the winning pitcher, striking out eight, walking one, allowing four hits and five runs. Carter Johnson finished out the last two innings, striking out one, allowing one hit and one run. Ben Dewey and Cooper Bexell each hit doubles. Whited hit three singles, Jordan Fjosne, two. Henry Ribich, Bexell, Logan Privette, Logan Orvedahl, and Blake Juhl connected for a single. Ben Dewey led the team in runs batted in with three. Ribich, Fjosne, Privette, Whited, and Juhl each had one RBI. The infield had four errors.

At seven o’clock, the Rebels had to play the winners of the first game, Duluth Marshall Hilltoppers, the number one seed with a record of 20-1. Whited got a solo hit for the Rebels and the only RBI ruining Marshall’s pitcher, Brett Benson no-hitter. Starting on the mound was Andrew Burn. In relief, was Ben Dewey and Ethan Burton. Hilltoppers scored 19 runs on 14 hits to win the game, 19-1.

The third tournament game for the Rebels, was held on Thursday, May 30, in Nashwauk. After the first game, the tournament is double elimination. The Rebels faced the Eveleth-Gilbert Bears. Privette was on the hill for all six innings striking out three, one walk, five hits and five runs. Fjosne and Bexell were hit by a pitch in the first inning and Privette in the third. Ribich scored in the third on a hit by Bexell for MLWR’s only score. All of the five Bears’ runs were unearned and scored in the fourth inning. Bexell ended the season with two hits, Ribich, Johnson, Juhl and Orvedahl each with one. The Bears took the victory 5-1.

Rebels ended their season with a record of eight wins and ten losses for a tie with Proctor in the section. They were ninth out of 16 teams in Section 7AA. The graduating seniors are Bexell, Burn, and Carter Klund.
