MLWR baseball team takes on Virginia, Greenway, Duluth Marshall, and Mesabi East


The Moose Lake Willow River Rebels’ baseball team was on the road three nights this week and had a home game Friday night. Monday, May 13, MLWR arrived at the Virginia sports complex to take on the five and four Blue Devils. It was senior night for Virginia, so the JV played first. The Rebels’ JV lost 2-1. Then they introduced the twelve seniors and their parents. The varsity game didn’t get started until 7:30 under the lights. The Virginia pitchers struck out 14 Rebel batters. Pitching for MLWR was Logan Privette for five innings, striking out eight, walking three, allowing four runs and eight hits. Carter Johnson came in to pitch the last inning. The Rebels left six runners on base. The Blue Devils scored one in the first, second, and sixth innings and two in the fifth. MLWR was held scoreless until the sixth when Privette batted in Blake Juhl. Virginia won the game 5-1. Rebels had three hits from Privette, Drew Danielson, and Juhl. Neither team committed any errors. Winning pitcher was Blue Devils’ Jack Perala, pitching six innings.

On Tuesday, May 14, the bus took the boys back up north to Marble to play the Greenway Raiders/Titans (1-11). Cooper Bexell and Danny Whited shared the pitching duties. Bexell allowed three runs on six hits, striking out three and walking two. Whited struck out two and walked one. The Rebels and Greenway each got two runs in the second inning. Blake Juhl hit a double, Johnson walked, and Danielson got hit by a pitch. Juhl stole home. Andrew Burn hit one to the shortstop for an out but the runners advanced. Johnson scored and Burn got the run batted in. Greenway scored two runs in the bottom of the second to tie it up. Greenway’s Mitchell Vekich scored in the third getting on base with a single. The Rebels were unable to answer back losing 2-3. Bexell, Henry Ribich and Johnson finished with one hit.

The JV played Greenway and tied with a score of 7-7.

On Wednesday, May 15, the Rebels arrived at Wade Stadium to play the Duluth Marshall Hilltoppers at 7:00. Duluth East and Duluth Denfeld were playing the game before theirs and after seven were tied 3-3. Their game had to go three extra innings with Duluth East finally winning it. When the Rebels left home it was 75 degrees. The Rebels game did not get started until 8:30 and the temperature at the stadium was 39 degrees. The Hilltoppers (15-1-0) have lost one game this season to Minnehaha Academy. The Rebels got runners on base nine times but were unable to get them across home plate. Pivette, Bexell and Johnson each got singles. Ribich and Jordan Fjosne got on base three times with walks. Whited started out on the mound allowing five runs on three hits, striking out two and walking three. Johnson and Danielson finished out the game pitching. The Rebels had four errors. Marshall’s Carter Sullivan hit a homerun and was also the winning pitcher. Marshall scored one run in the second, four in the third, one in the fourth and four in the fifth to win the game in five innings, 10-0.

On Friday, May 17, Mesabi East (4-6-0) came to Moose Lake. The Rebels got a victory on their home field scoring 13 runs on nine hits to win 13-8. The Rebels left 12 runners on base. Fjosne was the winning pitcher going four innings, walking four, striking out two, allowing two hits and three runs. Carter Klund pitched two innings and Juhl the last one. The Rebels scored five in the first inning, one in the second, six in the third and one in the sixth. Juhl and Ethan Burton each hit a double. They had nine hits; Ribich with three, Juhl and Burton with two each, Johnson, Andrew Burn, Whited, and Logan Orvedahl each with one hit. Orvedahl was hit by a pitch in the first and third innings. Mesabi East and MLWR each had three errors. MLWR had nine runs batted in. Ribich, Fjosne, Bexell, and Juhl had six stolen bases.

The JV defeated Mesabi East 9-2. Scoring for the Rebels were Vance Aho, Sam Dewey, Zach Youngs, Ribich, Johnson, Danielson, Burton, and Myca Helfman.

MLWR is now 7-8-0. They will host Crosby-Ironton on Thursday at 4 pm. The JV only will play Duluth East at Wheeler Field on Friday, May 24. 7AA playoffs start on Tuesday, May 28 (site to be determined).
