Rebels baseball team defeats Pine City


The Moose Lake Willow River Rebels baseball team (5-5) hosted the South Ridge Panthers (7-2) on Tuesday, May 7. In the first inning, Henry Ribich and Cooper Bexell scored on a walk and a hit. The Panthers lead off hitter, Alias Tuominen, got to first on an infield error. Bexell was on the mound and struck out the number two and three batters and the number four batter popped out to center field. South Ridge took control in the second inning and scored seven runs, batting through the entire order, with two batters at the plate twice. The Rebels were unable to score any more runs. South Ridge scored three more in the fourth to take the win 10-2.

The Panthers committed no errors to the Rebels seven. Panther’s Riley Kinsley was the winning pitcher. Bexell pitched three innings allowing ten runs, six hits and striking out five. Andrew Burn threw three innings allowing two hits and walking two. Drew Danielson finished out the game pitching the last inning, walking one, striking out two, and the Panthers got one hit.

Bexell and Logan Privette each got one hit. Privette batted in a run. Bexell got hit by a pitch.

The Rebel’s JV turned the tables on South Ridge winning 17-3. Sam Dewey was the winning pitcher. Carter Johnson, Danielson, Ethan Burton, Sam Dewey, Zach Youngs, Mycha Helfman all scored two runs. Ribich scored four runs.

On Thursday, May 9, MLWR’s team traveled to Pine City (4-4 overall record). The varsity and JV played at the same time. Four varsity players were missing due to injuries and other commitments. Pine City is ranked fourth is the Great River Conference with a 3-1 conference record. The Rebels scored two in the first and third innings and one in the seventh to win the game 5-1.

The Rebels had five hits. Johnson had three hits and two runs batted in. Carter Klund, Logan Orvedahl and Danny Whited each hit singles. Ribich and Privette both got doubles. Jordan Fjosne had a sacrifice. Burton, Johnson and Klund all got to first on walks. Johnson stole second and third and Klund stole second.

Whited was the winning pitcher going all seven innings. The Rebels finished the game without any errors.

The Rebels now have a 6-6-0 record. They will play Mesabi East at home on Friday, May 17 at 4:00. They travel to Mora on Monday, May 20, and Rush City on Tuesday, May 21, for 4:30 games.

The Polar League Conference standings are: Cook County 9-1-0, Esko 4-1-0, South Ridge 3-3-0, Silver Bay 3-4-0, MLWR 3-4-0, Carlton 2-2-0, Wrenshall 1-1-0, McGregor/Cromwell/Wright 1-1-0, Two Harbors 1-3-0, Barnum 1-4-0, Floodwood 0-3-0.
