Rebels and Bombers go head-to-head

On Thursday, May 2, the MLWR baseball team was scheduled to play up in Barnum, but the game had to be moved to Moose Lake's field. There was a big crowd at the ball park to watch the local boys. Henry Ribich scored in the first inning, reaching first on a single and stealing second. Cooper Bexell got a base hit to advance Ribich across the home plate. The Barnum Bombers scored three in the bottom of the first. Rebels answered back with three in the top of the second. Barnum took the lead 5-4 in the bottom of the third scoring two more runs. No runs were scored by either team in the fourth or fifth innings. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Barnum's lead-off batter, Max Salzer hit a double and scored on an error making the score Barnum six, Rebels four. Top of the seventh, Danny Whited, Blake Juhl got singles and Ribich hit a double. Bexell had full count and landed on first on a passed ball. All four players came into score, putting the Rebels in the lead 8-6. Barnum was the home team so they had one more chance to go ahead. They had runners on second and third but were unable to get them to cross the plate. Rebels took the victory 8-6.

Barnum left eleven runners on base, Rebels left seven. Winning pitcher was Danny Whited. Logan Privette started the game pitching one and third innings allowing three hits, three runs striking out one and walking three. Carter Johnson came in to pitch four innings, striking out two, allowing seven hits, three runs and no walks. Whited finished the last inning and two-thirds. The Rebels had four fielding errors to Barnum's two.

Andrew Burn and Ribich each hit doubles. Ribich, Burn, Bexell and Whited all had two hits, Jordan Fjosne and Juhl each had one hit. Johnson, Ribich, Bexel, Juhl and Whited batted in runs.

The Rebels JV team defeated Barnum 7-4.

Friday, May 3, MLWR played in the Hinckley-Finlayson tournament at Brennan Field. Their first game was against the Aitkin Gobblers. The game was over in five innings. The Rebels led after two innings 3-2. In the top of the third, Aitkin scored seven runs and five in the top of the fourth. The Rebels were held scoreless. Game ended with a score of 14-3 Aitkin. Whited led the teams in hitting with two, a single and a double. Fjosne, Privette and Logan Orvedahl each had one hit. Fjosne had two RBIs, Whited with one. Burn pitched two and a third innings, allowing five hits, three walks, eight runs and striking out four. Bexell pitched the rest of the third inning, allowing three runs, two hits, walking two and striking out one. Juhl finished the last two innings, walking one, striking out one, allowing four hits and three runs.

The next game of the tournament was Saturday morning. The Rebels opponent was Hinckley-Finlayson, the loser of the Esko game on Friday. MLWR got 12 hits and 14 runs. After three innings, the score was tied, 4-4. The Rebels scored three in the fourth, Jaguars scored two. Inning five was scoreless. After six innings, Rebels led 11-8. In the seventh, Ribich, Fjosne, and Juhl scored three more runs for a final score 14-9. Privette and Fjosne led the team in hitting with three. Privette hit a double in the third and finished the game with three RBIs. Juhl hit a double in the sixth. Juhl and Burn each had two RBIs. Ribich had two hits and two stolen bases. Bexell, Johnson, Juhl and Burn each had one hit. Whited got on base twice on infield errors. Johnson and Fjosne stole second twice when on first base. Whited pitch five innings, striking out six, walking three, allowing seven hits, and six runs. Privette pitched the last two, striking out two, walking one, allowing one hit and three runs. The Rebels had five fielding errors to Jaguars' eleven.

MLWR's captains are Whited, Bexell, Carter Klund, and Fjosne. Student manager is Spencer Lower. Head coach is Spencer Clough, JV coach is Charlie Borak. They are assisted by Jim Roth and Trevor Nummela.

The JV and varsity teams are scheduled to play in Pine City on Friday, May 10, in Virginia on Monday, May 13, and on Tuesday, May 14, in Greenway. Starting time is 4:30.
