Superintendent Bill Peel's Report for Willow River School

We are on our final month of school, and I can’t believe how fast the year has gone. And what a successful year it was! I want to thank our wonderful staff, parents, guardians, and community members for their hard work and continued support. We experienced a few more days of inclement weather this year, which places a strain on families. I understand the impact of closing school, and I want to stress how this decision is not made lightly. Area superintendents rely on the National Weather Service through the Duluth, Minnesota office of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for current and expected weather conditions. We communicate often and take into consideration the impact that either closing or having school will have on our districts. First and foremost, we consider the safety of our students, staff, and family members.

Our students will remain very busy in May, with several activities planned. Most grades will be taking their field trips to various locations around the state. These trips are both educational and fun. We also have our spring music programs. The elementary program will be May 23 at 9 am. We will have the one show this spring, with the event taking place in the high school gym. Following the program, parents are invited to stay and eat with their child at the outside BBQ. The high school band and choir concert is the same date, but in the evening at 7 pm in the auditorium. Our seniors will be graduating on May 24 at 7 pm in the high school gym. I am sure they are all very excited. Let me be the first to wish them the very best in their future endeavors.

The final event I would like to mention is our Elementary Track & Field Day on May 28 starting at 9 am. Our physical education teacher, Mr. Wittnebel, has once again planned an amazing day and we encourage parents to join their students for a fun-filled day of activities. Remember, the last day for students is May 31 and is an early release day.

I want to thank everyone who has donated to our new playground sets! We will be starting installation in early June and will be asking for volunteers via Facebook and our website. Also, it is not too late to donate to the playground fund. Please see our next Willow Star and website for more information.

Our school board is currently in the process of strategic planning. One step in the process is to gain input from parents, guardians, families, and community members. The district will have available a four-question survey in both a paper and electronic format. Please look for more information in the Willow Star, on our website at isd577.org, and our Facebook page @WillowRiverAreaSchool. Your input is essential.

Have a great month and a wonderful summer.
