Rebels softball beats Duluth East, 8-2

April 18, 2019

The Rebels softball team started out hot against 4A school Duluth East. Natalie Mikrot led off with a triple and the next 4 batters, Dallis Kukuk, Rachel Christy, Ashley Grutkoski, and Bella Meyer, singled. At the end of 2 innings the Rebels had 11 base hits and a 7-0 lead. The hometown nine got at least one hit in each following inning and Sarah Christy pitched a complete game, surviving a home run in the third by Greyhound centerfielder Cassie Bergman, to win 8-2.

Meyer was the Rebels’ leading hitter going 4 for 4, scoring twice and driving in two. Grutkoski was 3 for 4 with a double, 3 runs scored and 2 RBIs. Mikrot and Rachel Christy were each 2 for 4 and Sarah Christy and Janna Bode were each 2 for 3 in the Rebels 16 hit attack. Sarah Christy struck out 5, walked 4, and gave up 6 hits in her 7 innings of work in the 35 degree early April Willow River air.

Defense was again a key as the Rebels committed just one error. Dallis Kukuk made a few dazzling plays at short. Janna Bode made a long running catch in the right center gap just in front of the fence with the bases loaded to end the second inning. Bella Meyer came in full speed to catch a liner on her shoestrings for the second out in the seventh. Natalie Mikrot played her usual stellar game behind the plate.
