Vehicles, including a squad car, hit with debris dropped off I-35 bridge in Hinckley

Juveniles were responsible for dropping eggs and branches onto vehicles from the I-35 bridge in Hinckley the morning of Thursday, April 11.

A call came in to the Pine County Sheriff’s Department at about 4 a.m. on the morning of April 11. A semi driver reported his vehicle being struck by unknown items when he drove by the Hinckley exit on I-35, according to Sheriff Jeff Nelson.

A deputy drove through the area to check the situation, and his squad was also hit. The deputy stopped to assess the situation, and the suspects ran, said Nelson. Two juvenile suspects were later caught, and others were identified.

The suspects were arrested and released pending formal charges. The squad car had damage to the right side. The final damage estimate will determine the charges.

Law enforcement determined the suspects were initially throwing eggs, and when they ran out of eggs, they switched to throwing sticks.

“Clearly the risk to public safety outweighs the damage an egg or other small projectile might cause,” said Sheriff Nelson. “When any object strikes a vehicle at freeway speed, the impact can be significant, and the noise it makes inside a car certainly can startle the driver and cause unintended reactions. If the windshield is affected, that compounds things as well.”

Sheriff Nelson advises anyone who gets struck by an object to avoid skidding to a stop or swerving and risk losing control. If there is damage to the vehicle that makes it undrivable, pull over in a controlled manner; if it is not safe to pull over at the time, travel to a safe location to inspect the vehicle and report the incident.

“What may start as a juvenile prank can turn serious in a very short time with very significant consequences,” he added.
