Rebels softball whitewashes Rangers in opener

April 11, 2019

The Moose Lake/Willow River softball team started their season with a 9-0 shutout win over Crosby-Ironton in 45 degree weather Friday April 5 in Crosby. The Rebels got to Ranger pitcher Gwen Rosecrans in the second inning with a walk by Maci Kukuk with bases loaded followed by a 2 run single up the middle by Janna Bode to take a 3-0 lead. The Rebels gradually built the lead to 7-0 going into the final frame when Natalie Mikrot led off a single and stole second. Dallis Kukuk drove her in with a double. Rachel Christy singled and stole second and eventually scored after Kukuk was gunned down at the plate on an infield grounder earlier in the inning.

Lilli Skelton started in the circle for the Rebels going the first 3 innings giving up just one hit, striking out two and walking one. Sarah Christy picked up a fourth inning save in relief, also just giving up one hit while fanning 9 Rangers to go with no walks. Bella Meyer and Mikrot each had 2 hits for the Rebels. Dallis Kukuk, Rachel Christy, Ashley Grutkoski, Kaitlin Ballentine, and Bode each collected one hit. Both Dallis Kukuk and her sister Maci made several nice plays in the field.

The Rebels have six games this week including being home Thursday against Cromwell (4:30 in Willow River) and a tourney in Zumbrota Saturday where they will face two top 10 ranked teams including Zumbrota-Mazeppa who has won 2 of the last 3 class 2A titles.
