On Sunday, March 31, the MLWR 6th grade girls basketball team headed to Grand Rapids for the Region 7 Pacesetters Tournament. With 6 teams in the tourney they were divided into 2 pools. Pool A consisted of MLWR, International Falls and Nett Lake with Pool B having MIB, Bagley and Park Rapids. Each team played each other in their own Pool with the 2 first place teams in each pool playing for the Championship, the 2 second place teams playing for overall 3rd place and the 2 third place teams playing for overall 5th place.

Up first for the Rebels was International Falls who they have never played before. Both teams came out pressing with the Rebels able to beat it but Intl Falls held a good defense. It was tough for the Rebels to score in the first half with them ending down 7-12. In the second half, the Rebels regrouped and fought back hard and were rewarded with a win of 24-21.

In the second game, the Rebels faced Nett Lake who, once again, they have never played. They were a small but quick team that had the Rebels on their toes. As soon as they rebounded they would have 2 or 3 girls on them making it hard to get the ball down court. Once again the Rebel's found themselves down 8-9 at the half. But once again they regrouped and fought back, allowing Nett Lake to only score 3 points in the second half. The Rebels pulled off another win of 16-12. By winning these two games, the Rebels moved onto the Championship game against Park Rapids.

Park Rapids played a more laid back game and never pressured the Rebels in their own end, thus leading to a slower paced game that may have thrown the girls off after the fast paced games they played earlier. Once again, the Rebels found themselves down after the first half, 2-10. Unfortunately, they could not rally back this time and ended up losing 9-23. The Rebels took second place in the tournament and qualified for the Pacesetters MIT tourney in Maple Grove in June. Scoring totals for the 3 games were Madison Wasche 17, Meghan Heavirland 10, Elsie Leino 6, Amelia Olson 5, Maddie Volk 5, Amanda Larson 4, and Ryleigh Sickler 2.

Next up is the Pacesetters Region 4 Tournament on April 6 and 7 at both Moose Lake and Willow River Schools. Almost all Rebels 4th through 9th grade girls and boys will be playing in this home type tournament, so come out if you can and cheer them on.
