Minnesota films featured at Highway 61 Film Festival

The 2019 Highway 61 Film Festival on April 4-7 will bring exciting independent films from local, national and international filmmakers, including great films from around Minnesota to Pine City venues.

And, for the first time, the film festival will be presenting all Minnesota-made films on Saturday evening on the big 40-foot wide screen in the Pine City High School Auditorium.

‘Enemies and Friends’

The action starts on Thursday, April 4 at 6:30 p.m. at Pine Center for the Arts (265 5th St. SE) with a set of short films, including some of the top animated, drama and documentary films in the festival.

‘From Home to the Stars’

The festival continues on Friday, April 5 at 6:30 p.m. with a series of award-winning films from Minnesota, across tye USA, and abroad – including the UK, Hungary, Ireland, Denmark, Spain, Croatia and Australia.

‘Magic in Minnesota’

The festival starts at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 6 on the big screen at the Pine City High Auditorium (1400 Main Street S) with 11 remarkable films from Minnesota filmmakers. Highlights include hilarious short comedies like “Rag Dolls” and ”Just Coffee,” and “Jay’s Longhorn,” the story of Minneapolis’ legendary punk rock music club.

‘Laugh to Death’

The festival continues on into Saturday night with a 9 p.m. show at Pine City’s Pizza Pub (500 3rd Ave SE). This set of comedy, action and horror films includes the Moose Lake-made film “Doppelganger” and the short film “Rest Stop,” based on a story by the legendary horror writer Stephen King.

Sunday films

On Sunday, April 6, movies return to Pine Center for the Arts at 4:30 p.m. with the award-winning Russian drama “The Lightest Darkness.” After a break, films will start again at 6:30 p.m. with a set of films from Minnesota (including the Mike Scholtz documentary “Riplist”) and around the USA.
