Pierz Ends Moose Lake Willow River Basketball Season

March 14, 2019

The Pierz Pioneers ended the Rebels' season Tuesday, March 4, at Willow River. The teams were evenly matched. Seeding indicated it would be a competitive game. Moose Lake Willow River was the number four seed and Pierz was the number five seed. Both teams played good defense and the half-time score was 26-24 in favor of the Rebels.

Rebounding and fouls were an issue for the Rebels. In the first half, the Pioneers dominated the offensive glass. Also, they shot eight free-throws, making all eight. A big difference in the game was at the free-throw line. Pierz shot 25 and made 19. MLWR shot only 9 making 7. Rebounds continued to be a problem in the second half. Pierz outscored MLWR 36-29 to win the game 60-55. The Rebels had an outstanding season, winning 19 games.

Scoring leaders for the Rebels were Mason Olson and Ben Dewey. Mason Olson had 21, Dewey 9, Michael Olson and Logan Orvedahl with 6, Phillip Sheetz 5, Adam Dragicevich and Brady Watrin with 4. The Rebels made ten threes. Mason Olson had 4, Michael Olson and Orvedahl 2, Ben Dewey and Sheetz with 1. Mason Olson was 5 for 5 at the line and Sheetz was 2 for 2. Watrin, Dewey, Sheetz and Orvedahl ended the game with a total of 6 steals. Mason Olson had 4 assists. Watrin pulled down 9 rebounds, Dragicevich 5, Dewey, Mason Olson and Carter Johnson with 2 each, Carter Klund and Michael Olson had 1.

Jonah Prokott for the Pierz Pioneers led their team with 16 points.

Rebel teams, at every level, had a very good season. Many players return for next year. Future years promise to be very exciting. Three seniors will be missed next year, Adam Dragicevich, Carter Klund and the best manager in the conference Logan Peterson.
