The UMD Faculty Woodwind Quintet will be performing on April 4th at Moose Lake Community School.

Get your tickets and hold on to your seats! The final Agate Encores Community Concert of the season is quickly approaching on Thursday, April 4th at 7:00 p.m. You won't want to miss this performance featuring The UMD Faculty Woodwind Quintet playing pieces by American and French composers. Performing on flute, oboe, clarinet, French horn, and bassoon, this premier ensemble is featured in many concerts each year in Weber Music Hall on the University of Minnesota Duluth campus as well as throughout northern Minnesota and Wisconsin. A respected part of the musical community, each of the musicians has studied extensively and performed internationally. Members also play regularly with the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra, Lyric Opera of the North, and the Lake Superior Chamber Orchestra as well as with several other prominent ensembles. The quintet enjoys outreach concerts and master classes at area schools, Honor Band events, and they are faculty members at the annual UMD North Shore Summer Music Experience, a weeklong camp for high school students.

The evening's concert will include music from the following composers:

Claude-Paul Taffanel (1844-1908) - a French flutist, conductor and teacher, who is considered to be the founder of the French Flute School.

Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) - a French composer and violinist who composed numerous pieces for wind instruments.

Vincent Persichetti (1915-87) - an important American composer, teacher and pianist who did a week's residency at UMD in Duluth in the early 1980's.

Arthur Berger (1912-2003) - an American composer, teacher and critic who was very active and influential until the end of his long life. His musical style has been described as "...searching, zestful, witty, certain about the things you can be certain about, and unafraid of mysteries". (Richard Dyer Boston Globe)

Jennifer Higdon (b. 1962) - Although she did not begin formal composition studies until she was 21, Jennifer Higdon is one of America's most frequently performed living composers, and has received numerous awards, including a Pulitzer Prize and a Grammy. She described her piece, Autumn Music, (which will be performed in Moose Lake) as follows: "Autumn comes to us in many guises: incredible explosions of color; air that suddenly snaps with crispness and clarity; a tinge of melancholy on the eve of change in all of our lives."

Agate Encores Community Concerts is grateful for the overwhelming support of the community in their inaugural season. Because of your enthusiastic endorsement, we look forward to presenting a sneak preview of our exciting 2019-2020 season at the April 4th concert. (Sh! It's a secret until then.) Join your friends and neighbors at the Moose Lake Community School on April 4th. Tickets will be available at the door - $15 cash or check. Come early at 6:00 and hear performances by Moose Lake band students under the direction of Mr. Ryan Hansen. As our patrons have written, "Thank you, dreamers, donors and ticket-buyers for making this new entry on our cultural calendar something we can always look forward to with eagerness and pride. We heartily encourage all of our community to support this new organization by attending the upcoming concerts – we'll see you there!"
