On Saturday, February 23 the MLWR 6th grade girls basketball team headed north to Eveleth for the 19th annual John Fish Sweet Sixteen Basketball Tournament. This tournament brings in 16 teams from around the state for one day. The Rebel's have been sending a team there for at least the last ten years, maybe more.

In the first game the Rebels played a team from Northwoods. They did not know what to expect from this team since they had never played them before. The Rebels came out with a strong press that led to turnovers and a quick 10 point lead. The Rebels never looked back and went on to a strong showing by winning 36-13.

In the second game, they faced a team of girls they have seen many times since 3rd grade, the team from Esko. This was their travel team that had been playing in tournaments around MN and Wisconsin most of the season. Esko came out strong and the Rebels held their own for as long as they could but eventually fell behind and ended up losing 11-36.

In their third game, the Rebels went up against MIB. They had not played them since 4th grade when the Rebels beat them in a Pacesetters game. Both teams have grown since then and knew it would be a close game. The Rebels led most of the first half but MIB scored 6 quick points, one a 3 pointer, in the final minute and led 6-12. In the second half the Rebels got within 4 points but ended up losing 17-24.

It ended up being a long day for the girls with their first game starting at 8am and the last game ending at 4:30pm. Scoring totals for the 3 games was Madison Wasche 19, Amelia Olson 12 (3 pointer), Elsie Leino 10, Ryleigh Sickler 10, Meghan Heavirland 6, Marie Bonander 2, Amanda Larson 2, and Lana Williams 2.
