February 28, 2019

The temperature was about 15 below zero early in the morning of Tuesday, Feb. 26, when the Moose Lake Fire Department was paged out to a pole barn fire west of Moose Lake.

“When we got close to the place, you could see the fire,” said Lt. Steve Trenhaile of the Moose Lake Fire Department in a telephone interview. “The 40-foot by 60-foot pole building was fully engulfed in flames.”

He said that the call came in at 1:50 a.m. The Kettle River, Barnum and Sturgeon Lake Fire Departments were called to provide manpower and water to douse the flames. The Mercy Hospital ambulance was called to stand by during the fire suppression efforts.

Cattle were housed in the pole building. Four calves didn’t make it out, said Trenhaile. The building is a total loss.

The pole building belonged to Dave Westerberg of Moose Lake, who lives on County Road 134 E.

Trenhaile said that the fire crews wrapped up the operations at 4:30 a.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
