Bombers' Sam Goodwin powers past Rebels' Adam Dragicevich for the score.

Moose Lake Willow Rebels improved their season record to 17-5 with a win over Barnum. The Rebels played suffocating defense to stop the Bombers, 57-42, in the Barnum gym Friday night, February 15. Both teams were primed for a tough battle. Teams located only four miles apart and players knowing each other always provides an intense contest. The gym was full with outstanding fans from both towns. Barnum never led during the game but the game was close most of the way. The Bombers were very disciplined on offense, taking only good uncontested shots. The problem was the Rebel defense. Barnum got very few shots that were not contested. Both teams played very hard wanting to grab bragging rights for the big rivalry. During the last few minutes of the game the Bombers made some big three-point shots to make it interesting. The game got very physical toward the end allowing the Rebels to shoot free throws to seal the win.

The Rebels have many players that contribute in different ways. A player may come off the bench and hit a big three. Other players play outstanding defense, rebound, pass and play smart. Together they do what they have to do so the team is successful. The coaches do an outstanding job getting the team ready and always making sure the team is prepared.

Mason Olson led the team in scoring with 27 points, Brady Watrin 9, Adam Dragicevich 7, Logan Orvedahl 8, Ben Dewey 4, and Michael Olson 2. Mason Olson had six threes and Dewey and Watrin each had one. Rebels were 14-24 from the free throw line. Mason Olson was 7 for 8 from the line. Watrin led the team in rebounds with 8, Dewey and Mason Olson had 3 each. Team leader in assists and steals was Dewey with 4 of each. Dragicevich and Watrin had 3 steals each.

Coach Wes Cummins stated "Big rivalry win in a packed, chaotic gym! This makes a clean sweep on the season, (C, JV, V...6-0). Mason Olson with another monster game (27 points), but it was a team effort on both ends!"

For Barnum, Blaze Hurst had 12, Sam Goodwin 10, Tyler Nynas 9, Ryan Weller 8, and Joe Peterson 3. From the line, the Bombers, shot 5 free throws making 3 of them.

The Rebel JV team won convincingly 74-37. Completing the sweep, the C team won by six points.

In the 7AA Conference standings right now, Esko is first followed by Pequot Lakes, Crosby-Ironton, MLWR, Pierz, Pillager, Barnum, and Aitkin.

The Rebels will welcome the Section 7AAA Hibbing Bluejackets on Friday, February 22. Their record is 15-6. On Tuesday, February 26, the Section 6AA Pine City Dragons (19-3) will come to the Willow River gym. Come take in some games. There will be a multitude of threes put up by these hoopsters.
