Special Election for District 11B House seat coming up on March 19

February 21, 2019

Candidates have filed for the vacated District 11B House of Representatives seat after Jason Rarick went on to win the District 11 State Senate seat in a special election on Tuesday, February 5. Rarick won with 52 percent of the 15,623 votes cast.

The filing period was from Friday, February 15, through Tuesday, February 19. Candidates could withdraw by Wednesday, February 20.

On the Republican side, Ayrlahn Johnson, Traci LeBrun, Nathan Nelson, Carl Pederson, Michael Cummins, and Joe Wolf have filed. The Republican endorsement convention was held on Tuesday, February 19, in Mora. If the non-endorsed candidates do not withdraw by February 20, there will be a primary election held on Tuesday, March 5.

On the Democratic side, Tim Burkhardt has filed. The Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party held its endorsing convention Monday, February 18, in Hinckley. Tim Burkhardt of Hinckley faced off with Oliver Dykstra of Sandstone, and Burkhardt was endorsed. Dykstra agreed to abide by the endorsement.

The special election will be held on Tuesday, March 19. Be watching upcoming editions for a special candidate profile section for more information on candidates.

In Pine County, the House 11B election does not include Kerrick or Windemere townships as they are part of House District 11A.

For absentee ballots, County Auditor Kelly Schroeder says to request absentee ballots as soon as possible as it will be “another tight timeframe”. The best way to do that is through the Minnesota Secretary of State website at https://mnvotes.sos.state.mn.us/ABRegistration/ABRegistrationStep1.aspx. Absentee ballots can also be requested in person at the county auditors’ offices at the Pine and Kanabec courthouses.

Those who vote by mail are cautioned to be aware of mailing in their ballots early enough to be received no later than March 19 to be counted.
