Moose Lake/Willow River Boys Defeat South Ridge

Moose Lake Willow River boys’ basketball team played South Ridge Panthers on Friday night, February 1, in Willow River. South Ridge came into the game with a 5-9 record. The Panthers were on the prowl and played well in the first half. The Rebels had a slow start and at the half led 36-25. MLWR persisted and kept working hard and won the game 77-47.

The Rebels shot 25 free throws making 17 of them. Scoring leader was Mason Olson with 23, Michael Olson and Brady Watrin had 10 each, Logan Orvedahl 9, Ben Dewey 6, Carter Klund and Landin Kuhajetz 4 each, Eli Werner and Carter Johnson 3 each, Sam Dewey and Phillip Sheetz 2 each, and Adam Dragicevich with 1 free throw. Mason Olson made 5 three pointers, Michael Olson 2, and Werner, Johnson and Orvedahl each made one. Jayton Nelson led the Panthers with 10 points and the team was 6 for 21 from the line.

The MLWR Rebel’s JV took on South Ridge before the varsity game and won 49-30.

On Saturday morning the Polar League Conference championship tournament for eighth graders was held in McGregor. Participating schools were Wrenshall, Silver Bay, Two Harbors, Carlton, Esko, Barnum, Cromwell, Cook County, McGregor, South Ridge, Floodwood and Moose Lake Willow River. The Rebels defeated Carlton in the first pool play game 42-27. Their next pool play game was against Esko. Rebels won that one 42-39. That win placed them in first place for Pool B. After pool play the bottom 4 teams were eliminated, Carlton, Silver Bay, Floodwood and Cook County. MLWR took on Barnum next, defeating them 36-22. South Ridge defeated Wrenshall 39-38, so the Rebels played South Ridge in the semi-finals winning 36-28. South Ridge had a 6’6” eighth-grader. MLWR and Esko competed in the fifth game of the day for the championship. At half-time the score was 25-21 Esko. Esko won the game 46-36 and MLWR got second in the twelve-team tournament.

The Thursday night Cromwell-Wright game was postponed because of no school and was rescheduled Saturday night. The Cardinals, a very skilled team well coached by Bill Pocernich, came into the game with a 11-3 record. Congratulations to Cromwell-Wright Cardinal Micah Pocernich scoring his 1,000th point during the contest. Each of the Rebel players, that had been in the game in the first half, only scored one basket. Cardinals outscored the Rebels 28-19 in the first half. The Rebels played them almost even in the second half but could not make up the first half difference. Rebel’s shots were falling short and they were not able to catch up. Cardinals won 59-46. Watrin had 13 points, Mason Olson 11, Dragicevich 8, Dewey and Johnson 5, Sheetz , and Orvedahl with 3 each. Olson had 3 threes, Dewey, Johnson, Sheetz and Orvedahl each had one. Micah Pocernich led the Panthers with 20, including 4 three pointers.

The Rebel JV defeated Cromwell-Wright by a big margin, 65-25.

Friday February 8th the 15-5 Rebels will host the 6-10 Two Harbors Agates. Two Harbors is 5th in the Polar League-Big conference; MLWR is second.
