Big Section Win Over Crosby-Ironton

Moose Lake Willow River boys' basketball team played three games last week winning two of them. On Tuesday, January 22, they took on Crosby-Ironton Rangers on their home court. Crosby's record before the game was 12-1. Their only loss was to Pequot Lakes. The Rebels surprised the Rangers beating them handily by 19 points. Ten minutes into the game, MLWR led by 10. At half-time the Rebels were ahead 39-32. MLWR players were 11 for 12 (92%) at the free throw line. They made 9 three-point shots. The final score was 76-57 for the home team.

Mason Olson scored 20 points, Brady Watrin 19, Logan Orvedahl 16, Adam Dragicevich 11, Phillip Sheetz 6, Ben Dewey and Carter Johnson had 2 each. Mason Olson and Dewey led the team in assists with 7 a piece and Watrin had 6. Watrin pulled down 9 rebounds, Dragecivich 8 and Dewey 5. Kyle Skeim for C-I led with 17 points. C-I made 3 threes and were 10 for 14 from the line.

In the JV game, Phillip Sheetz drained 8 three-point shots for 24 points. He also made 2 in the varsity game for a total of 10 for the night. The Rebels got the victory, winning 47-34. The Rebel C team won also. The 7th and 8th grade teams traveled to Carlton and both came home with wins.

On Thursday, January 24, the Cloquet Lumberjacks were host to the Rebels in their new facility. Cloquet is a Class 3A school coming into the game with a 7-9 record. They were big, fast and quick. They had done their homework and their defense held down the Rebels' scoring attacks. In the first half, MLWR kept up with them and finished the half trailing 36-39. MLWR couldn't stop their inside game, allowing them to pull ahead and win the game 77-59. Coach Wes Cummins stated that the only bad loss is the one that ends your season. Learn from it and move on.

The Rebels made seven three-point shots and Cloquet made two. Scoring for the Rebels were Dragecivich and Watrin with 15 each, Mason Olson 13, Orvedahl 6, Dewey 4, Sheetz and Michael Olson each with 3. Rebounding leaders were Watrin with 11, Dewey 5, Dragecivich 4 and Johnson 2. MLWR shot 11 free throws making 6 while Cloquet shot 24 making 15. Lumberjacks' scoring leader was Nick Flynn with 30.

The JV faced their second loss of the season (14-2) losing by 6, 61-55. The MLWR C team won 55-51. The 7th and 8th grade both were victorious at home over Barnum. The 7th grade (13-1) suffered their only loss at Esko. They will host Esko on Thursday.

On Friday, January 25, the Class 1A Carlton Bulldogs (4-10) welcomed the Rebels. The game got rough with lots of fouls called. Dragecivich was a force in the paint. At the half MLWR led 41-27 and finished up the game victorious, 78-65. The Rebels shot 24 free throws. Dewey was 6 for 6, Johnson and Carter Klund were each 4 for 6, and Orvedahl was 2 for 2.

Scoring leader was Dragecivich with 29, Olson 15, Dewey 10, Klund 8, Johnson 6, Eli Werner 3, Michael Olson, Duane Broughton, and Orvedahl had 2.

The MLWR JV dominated the Carlton Bulldogs winning 72-23. All 15 players got minutes.

On Friday, February 1, the Class 1A South Ridge Panthers (4-9) will take on the Rebels at Willow River. No games on Tuesday, February 5. In the Polar League-Big conference standings, Esko is 3-0, MLWR 2-1, Barnum 2-1, Cook 2-2, South Ridge 0-2 and Two Harbors 0-3.
