Rebels Win Two High Scoring Games

January 24, 2019

Moose Lake Willow River boys’ basketball team traveled to Duluth Marshall and McGregor last week. On Tuesday, January 15, Rebels were guests of the Marshall Hilltoppers. Marshall is a great passing team and doesn’t waste time shooting the ball. The teams traded possessions up and down the court at a fast pace leading to a high scoring game. At half-time Rebels led 42-41. In the second half with 13:45 left to go the Rebels took an eight-point lead 51-43. At the final buzzer, it was MLWR with the game 82-77. The last couple minutes of the game could have gone either way. Ben Dewey blocked a last minute Hilltopper shot that would have tied it up. The Rebels shot 26 three-point shots making eight of them. Mason Olson made five and Logan Orvedahl with three.

Scoring leader was Mason Olson with 28. Adam Dragicevich had 25, Brady Watrin 14 (12 in the first half), Orvedahl 11, Carter Klund and Michael Olson with two each. Watrin had 10 assists, Dewey and Mason Olson three, Carter Johnson two, and Dragicevich with one. Dewey, Johnson, Watrin and Dragicevich stole the ball from the Hilltoppers twice. Dragecivich and Watrin both had seven rebounds. Johnson had four and Dewey two. Rebels were eight for nine at the charity strip. Dragicevich made all five of his free throws and Mason Olson was three for three. Rebels had sixty-five field goal attempts making half of them. Marshall’s leading scorer was Felipe Rondon Munoz.

MLWR junior varsity won 52-41. The seventh and eighth grade were in Willow and defeated Duluth Ordean East. On Thursday, Duluth Lincoln Park came to MLWR. Both Rebel teams won 70-21 and 69-12.

On Friday, January 19, MLWR went to McGregor. Mason Olson made seven threes, sinking five in the first half. Rebels were leading at half time 43-36. In the second half, MLWR scored 42 points to McGregor’s 12 for a final 85-36.

Mason Olson scored 25 points. Dragicevich had 14, Watrin 12, Carter Klund 10, Michael Olson 9, Phillip Sheetz 5, Duane Broughton 4, Sam Dewey and Orvedahl 3, Ben Dewey 2, and Johnson 1. McGregor Mercuries’ Joe Baker had 16. He was eight for nine from the free throw line.

Rebels JV won 63-25. Sheetz had 12, Sam Dewey 11, Orvedahl 10, Drew Danielson 9, Michael Olson 7, Duane Broughton 6, Keagan Fredrickson-Noyes 4, Chance Lunde and Ethan Burton 2. Mercuries did not have a C-team.

Minnesota-scores.net ranks teams by their records and by points scored. MLWR is #17 in the state for their record of 12-3. Crosby-Ironton is #3 with a 12-1 record. MLWR is also in the top twenty in Minnesota for points scored at #18 with 71.7 average of points scored in a game.

MLWR (12-3) Class AA will play at Cloquet (7-8) Class AAA on Thursday, January 24. Friday, January 25, they travel to Carlton (4-8) Class A. On Tuesday, MLWR host Cromwell-Wright (9-2) Class A. Cromwell-Wright lost 62-60 to Cloquet and Duluth Denfeld 61-56 in the Cloquet Christmas tournament.
