Lady Rebels split a pair of games

January 24, 2019

The ML/WR Lady Rebels played two games this past week; one against Duluth Marshall and the other against the McGregor Mercuries. The first game, against the Hilltoppers, ended in a loss. The Rebels started the game with a 6-4 lead and with the tough rebounding of Charis Blacklock and fast transitioning, were able to add an additional 4 points to make it 10-4. ML/WR maintained a slim lead at 15-14 when Duluth Marshall took the lead at 16-15 and never lost it. The Rebels kept the game within 5 points until the 4-minute mark when the Hilltoppers stretched out the lead to 36-25. The Rebel scoring went cold and Duluth Marshall took a 47-32 lead into half time.

ML/WR was able to break the full court press and penetrate the Hilltopper defense all game long, but the Rebels were unable to crawl out of the 1st half deficit. Behind the scoring of Duluth Marshall’s two leading scorers in the state (Grace Kirk and Gianna Kneepkens), the Hilltoppers extended the lead in the 2nd half to take a 93-64 victory.

“Rough game for us defensively,” said Coach Judd. “Going into the game, we knew who we had to stop, but unfortunately we dug ourselves a hole late in the first half with untimely turnovers and we gave Duluth Marshall too many second chance opportunities. They dictated the pace of the game and executed while we did not. We just need to get back to the fundamentals that we were lacking in the game. Gotta move on to the next game.”

Charis Blacklock led all Rebel scores with 24 points, Dallas Kukuk (8), Ellie Schaumburg (8), Natalie Mikrot (7), Monica Mikrot (6), Ella Rhoades (6), Meghan Granquist (3), and Maci Kukuk (2).

The Rebels were able to redeem themselves on Thursday against McGregor. The game started out with making good defensive rebounds and transitioning quickly which resulted in an early 17-3 lead at the 12-minute mark of the 1st half. McGregor then slowly clawed back into the game pulling within 8 points but the Rebels were able to close out the 1st half with a 28-17 lead.

ML/WR was able to maintain their tough defense and scoring drives to win the game 70-34. “We played well defensively,” said Coach Judd. “The girls did a good job of being physical and limiting our turnovers. I am happy with the way our girls responded and bounced back from Tuesday's game. We did a nice job executing early on offense and in the second half did a nice job getting to the free throw line. Everyone stepped in and contributed at a high level all the way to the final buzzer. Nice team win.”

Natalie Mikrot led all Rebel scorers with 14 points, Ella Rhoades (10), Charis Blacklock (10), Maci Kukuk (7), Carmen Hoffman (5), Meghan Granquist (4), Ellie Schaumburg (3), Skyla Thompson (3), Hannah Jirovec (2),and Emily Bohnsack (2).

The Lady Rebels play 3 games this next week against Greenway on Jan 21 in ML, Carlton on Jan. 24 in ML, and East Central on the 25th at East Central. All games begin at 7:15. Come cheer on your Rebels.
