Rarick endorsed by local Republican Party

January 17, 2019

The Republican endorsing convention held on January 8 determined there will be no primary for the Republicans and that District 11B State Representative Jason Rarick will be the lone GOP ticket on the ballot. The convention was held at 7:00 Tobies in Hinckley. Rarick was overwhelmingly endorsed by his party as their chosen candidate to run for the vacated Minnesota District 11 Senate seat formerly held by Tony Lourey. Lourey recently accepted an appointment as Minnesota Department of Human Services commissioner by Gov. Tim Walz.

Three other Republicans, Justin Krych of Esko, Carl Pederson of Pine City and Matthias M. Shir of Pine City, filed for the senate seat and later withdrew after the party endorsement. Therefore, no Republican primary will be held. As a formality, Rep. Rarick’s name and the third party candidate, Legal Marijuana Now’s John “Sparky” Birrenbach of Pine City, will be on the primary ballot, along with the two Democratic candidates, Michelle Lee and Stu Lourey during the primary on January 22.

Rarick and the candidate chosen from the Democratic primary will face off during the special election on Tuesday, February 5. See this week’s Moose Lake Star Gazette for absentee ballot and voting information. More information will be provided on each of the final candidates in the upcoming weeks prior to the election.
