Rebels over the Jaguars

Senior center Adam Dragicevich will be fouled on this effort. He went to the free throw line and scored 2 of his game high 22 points for his team. Dragicevich shared that honor with sophomore Mason Olson who also scored 22 points for his Rebel team.

Hinckley-Finlayson Jaguars with a 5-3 record, were host to Moose Lake Willow River Rebels boys' basketball team on Thursday, January 3. Rebels came out on fire and were ready to play. They hadn't played a game since December 20. The Jaguars couldn't keep up. Rebels led at the half by 12 points, 44-32. The second half the Rebels were outscored by seven. MLWR was having some problems with turnovers. The score was a five to six-point difference for much of the second half. The Jaguars committed 20 fouls compared to MLWR with only 14. MLWR shot 28 free throws making 18 of them while Hinckley-Finlayson shot eight for 10. The Rebels made six three-point shots and Jaguars made four. The final was MLWR 72 and Hinckley-Finlayson 67 bringing the Rebel's record up to 8-2.

Adam Dragicevich was back, making baskets in the paint and scored 22 points as did Mason Olson. Brady Watrin scored 15, Ben Dewey five, Michael Olson and Logan Orvedahl with three each and Carter Johnson had two. Olson led in assists with five and Dewey and Watrin each had four. Watrin had three steals and Dewey and Olson each had two. For the Jaguars, Lavonne Kroschel had 22, Anders Prater 14, Dion Bearstail 12, Cedric LaFave nine, Elijah Currie six, Dylan Mans and Ricky Skaff two each.

MLWR's junior varsity also defeated Hinckley-Finlayson 60-33 and the Rebels C-team won 40-30.

The next day, Friday January 4, the Rebels went north to Esko to take on the Eskomos, with a 5-4 record, in a Polar League conference game. The winner of this game would be in first place in the Polar League-Big Conference. Esko used a half-court trap in the first-half but the Rebels stayed right with them. At half-time, the players went to the locker room all tied up 33-33. In the second half, Esko took the lead and stayed ahead until the end, winning by 15, 80-65. The three-point shots were flying the whole game. For the Rebels, Mason Olson had four, Dewey and Watrin with two each, Phillip Sheetz and Michael Olson each with one. For Esko, Senior Payton Wefel had six three-pointers, Jon Stodola and Camden Berger with two each.

Scoring for MLWR was Mason Olson with 16, Watrin 12, Dewey and Dragicevich each with 10, Michael Olson eight, Johnson four, Sheetz three, and Carter Klund two. Wefel led for the Eskomos with 26.

The Quality Results Formula (QRF) standings in the Polar League-Big Conference are: Esko 6-4, Moose Lake Willow River 8-3, Cook County 7-3, Barnum 3-6, South Ridge 1-7 and Two Harbors 1-6. The QRF rankings take into consideration the win/loss records, the opponents win/loss records, and class differential between the teams.

MLWR junior varsity suffered their first loss of the season. Esko won 48-37. Duane Broughton had 12, Landin Kurhajetz eight, Sam Dewey and Sheetz with six each and Michael Olson with five. The C-team defeated Esko by one.

MLWR will host Wrenshall on Friday, January 11 and travel to Duluth Marshall on Tuesday, January 15.
