Big win at home over Eveleth-Gilbert

Freshman Phillip Sheetz put up 12 points in the Rebels game against Eveleth-Gilbert.

Moose Lake Willow River boys' basketball team was host to the Eveleth-Gilbert Golden Bears on Monday, December 17. Eveleth-Gilbert made the trip from the north looking for their first victory. The Golden Bears have been struggling to score points. The most points they have been able to score this year has been 40.

The Rebels were shocked as the Bears took an early lead. The Golden Bears were determined to break the 40-point mark. MLWR shook off Eveleth-Gilbert's quick start and put the pressure on defensively. Rebels stretched their lead by half-time to 39-17. Eveleth-Gilbert did not provide much more excitement in the second half. The Rebels dominated on defense and began finding their shooting range. Final score was Rebels 70 Golden Bears 36.

Statistics for the Rebels: Brady Watrin led with 16, Mason Olson 12, Phillip Sheetz 12, Logan Orvedahl 11, Adam Dragicevich nine, Ben Dewey and Michael Olson three, Carter Johnson and Carter Klund two. Mason Olson was the leader in assists with seven, Overdahl two, Sheetz, Michael Olson, Klund, and Johnson one each. Watrin also was the leader in rebounds with seven, Dragicevich, Dewey, Orvedahl each had four, and Johnson three. Rebels had 27 rebounds to Bears' 25. Johnson had the most steals with three, Dewey, Mason Olson, Dragicevich, and Orvedahl with two each. Three-point shots were made by Watrin, Sheetz four, Mason Olson two, and Orvedahl two.

The MLWR JV team played Eveleth-Gilbert before the varsity game winning 53-11. The Rebels seventh and eighth grade teams both defeated Eveleth-Gilbert earlier in the evening.

On Tuesday, December 18, Cloquet's junior high players came to Willow River. Rebels' seventh grade won 56-14 and the eighth grade finished with a victory.

The MLWR JV and varsity team made the trip to the home of the Mesabi East Giants. The JV started out with an effortless victory of 77-23. The varsity took the stage and played a quick, fast-paced, energetic style of basketball. Of the top 13 players for Mesabi East only two were under six-feet tall. They could put the ball in the basket in the paint with ease. The full court press slowed the Rebels down and at the half, it was Rebels 33-Giants 39.

A multitude of threes were in the air with Mason Olson connecting on six of them, Sheetz had four and Dewey and Orvedahl each had one. Near the end of the game the Rebels had to foul to get the ball back. MLWR only had two fouls going into the last couple minutes and it was a four-point game. The Rebels came out short, losing 67-75.

Mason Olson led all scoring with 26, followed by Dragicevich 14, Sheetz 12, Watrin seven, Orvedahl five and Dewey three.

Watrin led the team in rebounds with 12, Mason Olson, Dragicevich, Sheetz and Johnson each had three and Dewey and Orvedahl each had two. Watrin also was the leader in assists with seven, Dragicevich four, Dewey, Johnson, Mason Olson and Orvedahl each had two and Sheetz with one. The Rebels were five for eleven at the line. There were 16 personal fouls called on the Rebels and 13 on Mesabi East.

The Rebels start the new year off with their opening game at Hinckley-Finlayson on Thursday, January 3.
