Victories at Pillager and Cook County

December 20, 2018

Moose Lake-Willow River boys basketball team had to travel far to play their games last week. Tuesday, December 11, the Rebels made their way to Pillager to compete. Pillager had only two seniors just like the Rebels. Half of their varsity players were six-feet or taller. MLWR led most of the way but at one-point Pillager got it within four. At the half, Rebels were in front 35-27. Turnovers were a big factor in the game for both teams turning it over more than forty times. MLWR scored 19 points off of the turnovers. Final score was 64-51 MLWR.

Scoring for the Rebels: Brady Watrin 19, Adam Dragicevich 17, Logan Orvedahl 11, Mason Olson seven, Michael Olson six, Ben Dewey and Carter Johnson each with two. Watrin and Dewey led the team in steals. Adam Dragicevich had seven rebounds, Watrin and Mason Olson six, Orvedahl five, and Johnson four. MLWR made six out of 11 free-throws. Landin Kurhajetz had two blocked shots. Pillager Huskies were led by 6’4” Spencer Schaefer.

The Rebel JV team defeated Pillager 66-46. Landin Kurhajetz led with 15 followed by Sam Dewey 13 and Logan Orvedahl with 11. The C team also won 53-46. The seventh and eighth grade Rebels played Hermantown in Willow River that same night and won both games. Thursday, December 13, the seventh grade traveled to Barnum winning 50-24 and MLWR eighth grade over Barnum 47-20.

On Friday, December 14, MLWR made the trip up to Grand Marais for an early game with the 3-1 Cook County Vikings. The Vikings were a very good team and led at the half 37-34. In the second half MLWR’s defense kept them from scoring at will and held them to only 21 second half points to the Rebels 46 points. There is a special chemistry between the players and they anticipate the moves of their teammates and are successful.

Mason Olson led the team in scoring with 23, Dragicevich 20, Watrin 15, Ben Dewey five, Orvedahl five, Johnson four, Michael Olson three, Philip Sheetz three, and Carter Klund two. Olson, Watrin, Sheetz, Dewey and Orvedahl all connected on threes. The Rebels shot nine for 12 from the line for 75 percent. Johnson had a booming blocked shot for the only block for the Rebels. MLWR kept their fouls to a minimum with 11 for the entire game. Leading the team in steals was Ben Dewey with six. Dragicevich led all in rebounds with 10 followed by Michael Olson with six, Dewey and Watrin five each. Mason Olson was the assist leader with seven, Watrin four, Dragicevich three, Dewey and Michael Olson two, and Johnson and Eli Werner with one each. Junior Jordan Porter made 21 points for the Cook County Vikings.

The MLWR JV defeated Cook County Vikings JV 77-23.

On Thursday, December 20, the Braham Bombers will be in the Willow River gym for the Rebels final game until the new year.
