Coach Dave Louzek speaking to the Rebel football team after a tough loss on Friday.

The Moose Lake-Willow River Rebel football team traveled to Brainerd to take on the Barnesville Trojans in the first round of the state football tournament last Friday night. The Rebels committed FIVE turnovers on the night, which led to their demise to a tough, well coached Barnesville team.

Barnesville opened the scoring on their second possession when crafty sophomore quarterback Adam Tonsfeldt sprinted 61 yards for a touchdown on an option play. The two point conversion was successful on a tipped pass by Rebel Jeremiah Weidendorf making the score 8-0 Barnesville.

The next Rebel possession ended in an interception by Barnesville and it was returned to the Rebel 34 yard line. Barnesville marched it down on the ground and scored again with Kellen Hinsz running it in for a 14-yard touchdown. Two point conversion failed and Barnesville led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The Rebels couldn't get anything going on offense the next possession and punted to the Trojans who took over on the Rebel 37 yard line. Barnesville moved into scoring position with a nice pass on fourth down and then scored on a double reverse play with Hunter Anderson going in for the score. Two point conversion failed Trojans 20, Rebels 0 with 6:50 left in the second.

Rebels tried a trick pass play on the ensuing kickoff and returned it to the Rebel 35. Rebels were stopped again and Adam Dragicevich had a nice 50 yard punt to the Barnesville 13 yard line. The Trojans had another long touchdown by Tonsfeldt on the quarterback option but it was called back due to a holding penalty. Rebel Brady Watrin then intercepted a pass and returned it to the Trojan 49 yard line. Rebel QB Mason Olson hooked up with Carter Johnson on a nice 15-yard pass moving the Rebels into scoring position to close out the half with 58 seconds remaining. The Rebels fumbled, however, and Trojan Nicolas Swenson retuned the fumble 76 yards for a touchdown to put the Trojans up 28-0 to end the first half.

The Rebels had a snowy send-off Friday, November 9 as they made their way through Moose Lake, Sturgeon Lake and Willow River on their way to Brainerd. Here the gals of Beautique Salon & Spa show their support for the Rebels.

The second half started with a Trojan fumble and Rebels recovered. The Rebels then returned the favor and fumbled giving the ball back to Barnesville. The Trojans drove down the field on the ground on a long drive and scored again on a QB option play making it 34-0 to end the third.

MLWR was then intercepted and Barnesville ran it down the field and had a 35-yard touchdown run by Nick Detloff to make the final score of the game. Extra point kick was no good making it 40-0 Barnesville.

The Rebels were led on offense by Trent Juhl who had 90 yards rushing and Carter Johnson who had 49 yards receiving. On defense, Blake Juhl had seven tackles and five assists, Logan Peterson had five tackles and six assists and a fumble recovery, and Weidendorf with three tackles and four assists.

The Rebels had a great season finishing 8-3 and ranked fifth in class AA and made another state tournament appearance. Thank you to all the coaches and players for all your hard work this season. Go Rebels!
