Moose Lake has been awarded a $600,000 grant, which will provide pedestrian access to the new school.

The City of Moose Lake is proud to announce that it has been awarded a $600,000 grant from the Minnesota Department of Transportation Local Partnership Program.

This grant will partially fund a walking and bicycling path from the bridge over the Moose Horn River along Highway 73 to the roundabout.

The paved 10-foot, two-lane path will provide safe walking and bicycling access to students, residents and others from the region.

With the construction of the school in a new location, safe access has been a priority for the city and school for many years. The city is ready to begin moving forward with safety and healthy living in mind.

To further fund this project, the city will continue to seek grant dollars through the Safe Routes to School Program. The city will be seeking letters of support for the grant application. Interested parties can contact the Moose Lake City Hall at (218) 485-4032.

The grant from MnDOT is for construction in 2021. That year was intentionally chosen to allow time for working with Safe Routes to School, which is already funding projects for 2021.

The cost and extent of this project is not going to be fully known until the Safe Routes to School grant is awarded in 2019. The focus of that grant is for a path from the roundabout to the new school along County Road 10.

The city is not interested in a project that comes with a burden on the taxpayers. This project is important enough that the city already has heard from many local partners that are interested in working with the city to complete the project.

For more information, contact City Administrator Tim Peterson at (218) 485-4010.
